Ben Stokes of England - Test Cricket

The first Test between England and New Zealand marks the beginning of the captaincy tenure of Ben Stokes and the coaching regime of Brendon McCullum for England.

Ben Stokes to captain England

Stokes was born in New Zealand and McCullum is one of the Black Caps’ all-time greats so it is almost fitting that they get their work underway against the Kiwis.

England vs New Zealand | 2 June – 6 June | Lord’s

To Win Match
England 5/4 | Draw 24/10 | New Zealand 21/10

England

Ben Stokes lines up as captain but there are still question marks about how much work he will be able to get through with the ball.

England have been hit by injuries to fast bowlers but have recalled veterans James Anderson and Stuart Broad with both favoured to make the XI.

Alongside them, we could see either young seamer Matty Potts or Somerset journeyman Craig Overton.

England are set to send former skipper Joe Root back to number four with Alex Lees, Zak Crawley and uncapped Harry Brook expected to make up the top three.

New Zealand

New Zealand have brought a strong Test squad to England with Kane Williamson ready to resume leadership of the team.

Tom Latham has led solidly in his absence and is also one of the form batters in the team.

South African born Devon Conway enjoyed a superb IPL but will need to shift gears completely for the challenges of Test cricket in England.

The New Zealand pace attack should relish conditions, especially the likes of Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Matt Henry while Neil Wagner might need to adjust his approach to be successful at Lord’s.

Verdict: New Zealand 21/10

New Zealand should be able to take advantage of England’s rebuild and snatch a series lead early on.
