Proteas fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Delhi Capitals due to a lower back injury.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury during the playoffs of the SA20 last month and will be monitored by Cricket South Africa’s (CSA’s) medical team.
His place at the Capitals will be taken by 21-year-old Australian, Jake Fraser-McGurk, a regular batter who occasionally bowls leg-spin.
Ngidi is expected to return for his South African domestic side, the Titans, in the second round of the CSA T20 Challenge in April.
Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter will also keep a close eye on the progress on Ngidi’s injury with the T20 World Cup on the horizon.
The national squad for the global tournament is set to be named in early May with a three-match series against the West Indies to follow.
The Proteas then kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on 3 June in New York.
