New Zealand vs India: First ODI Preview

Cricket ball and bails on field

India arrive in New Zealand fresh off the back of an ODI series win in Australia that was not without controversy.

Kane Williamson’s Black Caps should provide India with a huge test of their 2019 World Cup credentials.

To Win Match
New Zealand 14/10
Tie 35/1
India 57/100

New Zealand
New Zealand have enjoyed good form in ODI cricket so far this season, powered by the resurgence of veteran batsman Ross Taylor – and the return of Martin Guptill to partner the explosive Colin Munro at the top of the order.

The Black Caps are blessed with excellent pace-bowling stocks and a world-class wrist-spinner in Ish Sodhi.

Tom Latham will do double duty as a batsman and wicketkeeper in this series, after Tim Seifert failed to make a case for further time in the ODI team. Latham donning the gloves should allow the Black Caps to play with selections that much more.

Spin-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner returns as well, hoping to once again cement his place in the team after a long spell out with injury.

India
India are definite contenders for the World Cup crown, but it seems their biggest obstacle could be themselves.

Hardik Pandya and Lokesh Rahul were suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, following controversial comments they made on an Indian talk show earlier this month. The pair have yet to learn what sanction they will receive for their arguably sexist remarks.

Vijay Shankar and Shubman Gill have come in as replacements for the pair. Gill could use the opportunity to make a play for one of India’s troublesome middle-order batting slots at the World Cup.

India have a strong team altogether but will need to adapt to the conditions in New Zealand rapidly – and cope with the threat of the Black Caps’ potent top order.

Verdict: New Zealand 14/10
India have had little time to acclimatise to New Zealand – and that might just be the advantage the hosts need to come out on top.
