Cricket South Africa (CSA) boss Pholetsi Moseki has congratulated Proteas Women skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen for immeasurable contribution to the game in the past season where South Africa enjoyed a great deal of spotlight and growth.
This after Wolvaardt and Jansen were crowned SA Men’s Player of the Year and Women’s Player of the Year during the federation’s annual award ceremony in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Wolvaardt was the star of the ceremony, taking home five accolades including the Women’s T20 International Player of the Year, One-Day International Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.
The 25-year-old star, who assumed the role of captain last season, was also voted as the Fans’ Player of the Year.
“I would like to congratulate every single one of our winners for the excellence they displayed over the past 12 months,” Moseki said.
“It has been a promising year all around for South African cricket, and proof of that is in results as well as the growth of the game.
“Laura and Marco are the winners of our premier awards and have worked hard to achieve this recognition. We saw Laura elevated to captain of the Proteas Women, a responsibility she has thrived on,” he said.
“Marco too has enjoyed a phenomenal season, which culminated with his role as the Proteas Men enjoyed a strong campaign at the 50-over World Cup in India.”
Also, the Proteas reached their first-ever World Cup final when they finished as runners-up to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by West Indies and the US in June.
“On the domestic front, we are continuing to see talent blossom and congratulations to all the winners in that category as well,” Moseki said.
“Let us not forget to acknowledge our umpires, grounds staff and scorers, too.”
Meanwhile, Hollywoodbets Dolphins and Proteas left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj was voted by his peers as the Men’s Players’ Player of the Year.
Hollywoodbets Dolphins Women and national team spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba walked away with the Women’s One-Day Player of the Season award.
