Reserve day to decide MODC champion

Rain intervenes at Kingsmead with covers pulled across the field

A torrential evening thunderstorm at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead curtailed Friday’s Momentum One Day Cup final between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the Warriors, meaning that Saturday’s reserve day will decide the 2017/18 50 over champion.

On Friday the visitors won the toss and decided to bowl first which was justified early when they picked up the wicket of the in-form Morné van Wyk for six and then SJ Erwee was dismissed by Colin Ackermann for 13.

Dane Vilas was run out three and the Dolphins found themselves in trouble at 48/4 when Sibz Makhanya was given out LBW for a duck.

Senuran Muthusamy and Vaughn van Jaarsveld combined to put on 41 for the fifth wicket before the latter was caught at mid-on for 42 off 57 balls.

Muthusamy then dug in to record a valiant half century as he and captain Keshav Maharaj added 32 for the sixth wicket. Maharaj was then bowled by Ayabulela Gqamane for 20 from 24 deliveries.

Muthusamy and Rob Frylinck were in the process of resurrecting the innings as they accumulated 33 but the rain then arrived at Kingsmead with the Dolphins 154/6 in the 40th overs.

Muthusamy was 53 not out and Frylinck was 12 not out when rain brought a premature end to the match.

The final will be recontested on Saturday, 03 February, with play starting at 13:30.
