CAF Confederations Cup: Group Stage Final Round Preview

Our football writer previews the final round of fixtures in the group stage of the 2017 CAF Confederations Cup which kicks off on Friday evening.

A dramatic turn of events is on the cards all over Africa as group stage action reaches its climax. SuperSport United will be hoping to reach the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederations Cup. in order for that to happen they must beat CF Mounana and hope that the match between Horoya and TP Mazembe does not end in a draw.
Friday 07 July 2017
FUS Rabat 3/10 | Draw 38/10 |Rivers United FC 8/1
Both teams
go into this clash needing miracles. Rabat anchor the Group A table with six points. That’s three behind the top two teams. They’ve won two and lost three of
their opening five games.
Rivers
United are third on the log with the same number of points as their opponents. If
they win and one of the top two teams loses, head-to-head statistics will come
into effect. They’ve won two and lost three of their opening five games of the
group stage, conceding eight goals in the process. The teams are tipped to cancel each other out.

Club African 4/10 | Draw 28/10 | KCCA 15/2
Club African
are second on the log with the same number of points as their opponents.
However, they have a superior goal difference. The reason KCCA top the
standings are head-to-head statistics which are considered before goal differences in CAF competitions. The first leg match was won by KCCA 2-1.
Table
toppers, KCCA will be looking to qualify for the last eight without any
permutations by avoiding a defeat. They will be looking to do the double over
their opponents. They have won three and lost two of their group stage games. A draw would guarantee qualification
without permutation for both teams and I think that’s exactly what will happen. Value here at 28/10.

Odds to be updated on release.

TP Mazembe 8/10 | Draw 16/10 | Horoya 6/1
If they’re
serious about defending the trophy, TP Mazembe must win the match to guarantee
quarterfinal qualification. They top Group D with nine points, that same number of
points as their opponents. If they slip up and third-placed SuperSport United
win, they’re out.
Horoya will
also be watching over their shoulder to see how SuperSport fare in the other
encounter. The best thing they can do for themselves is to win the match at DRC
and leave Mazembe in trouble. Homeground
advantage will work wonders for TP Mazembe, they’re tipped to beat Horoya.
Supersport United | Draw| CF Mounana
Fresh from
winning the Nedbank Cup at home in South Africa, SuperSport United will be oozing
with confidence going into this match. Matsatsatsa need to win and hope one of
the teams above them loses to advance to the last eight. 2015 finalist with
Orlando Pirates, Eric Tinker has taken over the coaching reigns from Stuart
Baxter who has left the club to begin his second tenure for the national side.

Mounana are
rooted to the foot of the Group D table after losing all their first five
matches. SuperSport United beat them 5-3 at their own backyard. Mounama have been the whipping boys of the
group and the trend is set continue on Saturday.
CS Sfaxien | Draw | MC Alger
Both teams
have convincingly qualified for the quarterfinals with games to spare. CS Sfaxien
have 10 points, that’s one point behind their opponents. They need a win to
finish above them and avoid facing the Group A champions in the quarterfinals.

Just like
their opponents, MC Alger are only looking to finish at the summit of the
standings to prevent setting up a quarter-final showdown with the Group A
champions. When the teams faced each other in the first leg MC Alger won 2-1 at
home. Sfaxien are tipped to come out on top in front of their own fans.
Platinum Stars | Draw | Mbabane
Swallows
Both teams
have already crashed out of the tournament. Platinum Starts who have lost three times and drawn twice in their last five outings will be hoping to shock their
opponents from just across the border to finish above them.
Swallows
only have pride to play for. Avoiding a defeat against Platinum Stars will
ensure that they don’t finish at the bottom of the log. The first leg encounter
was won by Swallows 4-2. I think both
teams will field second string teams and the match will end in a share of the
spoils.
