Erwee named in South Africa’s Hong Kong Sixes team

Durban – After starring in the Hollywoodbets KZN Inland’s Africa T20 Cup winning campaign, Sarel Erwee has been called up to the South Africa team to take part in the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament at the end of October.

The South African team are technically the defending champions having won the last edition staged five years ago and the squad of seven will have their work cut out for them if they are to retain the title.

Being selected for the side came as a bit of a surprise to Erwee.

“To be honest I didn’t know that the tournament was happening,” Erwee commented.

“We were playing the Knights and I was batting and came off the field and saw a message from my mum congratulating me on my selection.

“I didn’t quite register until after I went out and checked social media!”

The Hong Kong Sixes became a festival of big hitting and a spectator spectacle and Erwee has chatted to a few people that have played in the tournament.

“I have spoken to Inland coach Shane (Burger) and Rob (Frylinck) who have both played in the tournament before and they say that it is so much fun.

“The field is tiny and it is all about hitting the ball out of the ground,” he added.

Growing up Erwee was familiar with the tournament and he is still a bit unsure of how to approach the event.

“I remember watching a tournament years ago when David Warner was playing so I have an idea about how the tournament works but that’s about it.

“We will be representing South Africa, which is a privilege, so we will come to grips with what is expected when get there,” Erwee said.

SA Sixes squad: Sarel Erwee (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Aubrey Swanepoel (VKB Knights), Corne Dry (VKB Knights), Jerry Nqolo (Border), Somila Seyibokwe (Warriors), Ferisco Adams (Boland), Farhaan Sayanvala (Gauteng)
