F1 2018: Canadian Grand Prix Preview

The F1 field heads to North America this weekend for the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix scheduled on Sunday the 10th of June.

With Monaco now behind them, the F1 field turns their attention to the Americas. More specifically Canada, which plays host to the seventh race of the year this Sunday.

The race has been dominated by Lewis Hamilton in the recent past with the ‘Brit winning the last three races held at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. The reigning Drivers’ Champion could use a win here as he is just fourteen points ahead of Sebastian Vettel on the standings.

Previous Race
So the premier race of the year in Monaco ended with Daniel Ricciardo bringing his Red Bull across the finish line in first place. That was Ricciardo’s second victory of the calendar year and has seen him move up to 76 points on the Drivers standings.

The remainder of the podium was made up of an all-star cast with Sebastian Vettel claiming second and Lewis Hamilton finishing third.

All things considered, Monaco actually proved to be a decent enough weekend out for Ferrari as Kimi Raikonnen’s fourth-place finish, coupled with Vettel’s second-place, ensured the Prancing Stag cut Mercedes lead at the top of the Constructor’s standings.

Speaking of Mercedes, their number 2 driver, Valtteri Bottas, managed to claim fifth-place out in the Principality, bringing his car across the line in front Esteban Ocon, who rounded out the top six.

One of the most impressive drives of the day came from seventh-placed rookie, Piere Gastly, who put in a solid shift in his Toro Rosso. He was followed across the line by Nico Hulkenberg, while the top ten was rounded out by Max Verstappen (9th) and Carlos Sainz (10th).

To Win Outright
Lewis Hamilton 12/10 | Sebastian Vettel 2/1 | Valterri Botas 10/1  | Max Verstappen 6/1 | Kimi Raikkonen 14/1 | Daniel Ricciardo 12/1

Track

A firm favourite amongst F1 Fans, the Canadian Grand Prix offers excitement at every turn with high-speed cornering and a kilometre straight that runs onto the aptly named ‘Wall of Champions’.

The Drivers will face thirteen turns, during each of their 70 laps, which include some of the trickiest hairpins on the F1 calendar. The track’s high-speed nature wreaks havoc on the cars braking system, which means tyre wear could be a massive issue, especially for Mercedes.

The track is known for producing spectacular crashes and with a bit of rain floating around Montreal, we can be sure of at least one appearance from the Safety Car this Sunday.

Last year’s Grand Prix was won by Lewis “The King of Canada Hamilton” with his teammate Valtteri Bottas claiming second and Daniel Ricciardo claiming third.

Value Bet

Fastest in Practice 1 – Sergio Perez @ 100/1
This is a massive speculator and I will be having a very small strike on it, but perhaps a Practice 1 Perez punt may just net us a small fortune. Canada is notorious for eating up tyres so some of the teams may opt to run a lot slower during the practice sessions. This could well open the door for an outsider like Perez to set the fastest time in P1.

Fastest Qualifier & To Win Race – Lewis Hamilton 14/10 & 13/10
One simply cannot punt against the ‘Brit when it comes to the Canadian Grand Prix. The reigning World Champion has dominated this event, winning the last three Grand Prix here while claiming pole on all three of those occasions.

He may not be in the same sort of form he was in last year but I cannot see Hamilton losing this race or qualifying anywhere but first. As there’s a bit more value on the fastest qualifier market, I recommend following that as opposed to the Race Winner market.
