IRB Under 20 Championship: South Africa v Georgia Preview

IRB Under 20 Championship: Round 1 Preview

The Baby Boks will be looking to build on their comfortable victory over Scotland when they take on a stubborn Georgian side on Saturday the 8th of June.

Chean Roux’ Junior ‘Boks will be looking to make it two bonus-point wins from two starts when they take on a plucky Georgian outfit, who showed a lot of spirit during their opening day defeat to the Junior All Blacks. A bonus-point win for the South Africans would leave them nicely poised to claim a semi-final berth heading into their final pool the game against New Zealand.

South Africa
The South Africans got their 2019 Under 20 Championship campaign off to an ideal start as they beat the Scottish juniors 43-19 in Round 1. The bonus-point victory has left them level on points with New Zealand -who they’ll face next Wednesday – in Pool C. The Baby ‘Boks are below their All Black counterparts on the standings, however, due to the New Zealander’s having a superior points differential.

The ‘Scots actually gave the South Africans a decent run up until the final 15 minutes of the game where a late blitz from the Junior ‘Boks saw them add a lot of gloss to the scoreline. The South Africans can ill afford another slow start as the Georgians are more than capable of turning the game into an absolute dogfight.

Georgia
While the boys from Eastern Europe failed to claim a point from their defeat to the New Zealander’s they can still be proud of their performance as they played some decent rugby for large swathes of their fixture.

The Georgians really do enjoy playing against the South Africans and ran their counterparts close last year in France where they went down by just six points. They will look to mix it up with the South African forwards at the set piece and in the collision.

Verdict: Georgia (+18.5) 9/10 *Forecast Handicap
I think the Georgians will give the South Africans a real run for their money here. The 45-13 scoreline rather flattered New Zealand, and I can see it being a lot tighter here.
