A scuffle occurred between Mourinho and members of both squads as City celebrated their 2-1 victory with loud music in an open-door dressing room after United staff took offence.

When asked about Sunday’s incident, Mourinho was unhappy with City’s behaviour, adding that his team showed more respect to Arsenal following their recent 3-1 win at The Emirates.

“For me it was just a question of diversity – diversity in behaviours and diversity in education. Just that and nothing more than that,” Mourinho said.

When asked to elaborate, Mourinho added: “Diversity of behaviour, of opinion, of education you know.

“What we did in the Arsenal stadium was completely diverse, what happened after that, the way we behaved as winners.”

Mourinho gradually grew more irritable as reporters continued to ask about the fracas, and reacted angrily when asked if he expected United to be punished by the FA.

Quizzed about reports that striker Romelu Lukaku could be punished for allegedly throwing a water bottle, Mourinho said: “You know, accuse, prove, show evidence and punish him.”

He then walked out of the press conference, while criticising them for not asking about United’s opponents on Wednesday, Bournemouth.

“You don’t like Bournemouth eh? You don’t respect them,” Mourinho said as he left the room.

City manager Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, defended his team’s celebrations but added that he was sorry if they had offended anyone.

“If we offended United – not just one player, not Jose – Manchester United, then I apologise,” he said.

“We have to enjoy those moments. If the people cannot understand that then I’m sorry. We won a derby,” he said of a Premier League-record 14th consecutive win.

“If we were not correct than I apologise to all of Manchester United. Our intentions were not that. It was to celebrate inside the locker room.”
