The IAAF World Championships hosted in London is literally heating up, as athletes have qualified for a spot in the 400M final race.

We look at which athletes are the main contenders in the Men’s 400M final race.

Wayde Van Niekerk
The current South African poster boy and stalwart is flying the SA flag high with his formidable performances on the track. Van Niekerk who hails from the mother city, made his mark when he stamped his authority as the fastest human over 400M, with the world record of 43.03 seconds he set in the Rio Olympics, smashing Michael Jordan’s record, which he held since 1999, of 43.18 seconds. All eyes will be on the World Champion, on Tuesday the 8th of August as he competes in the Final 400M race.

Steve Gardiner
The 21-year-old from the Bahamas finished at sub 44 seconds in the heats to qualify for the final. Gardiner switched to the 400M discipline in 2015 and it’s proven to work in his favour. He won a bronze in the 4 x 400M in the 2016 Olympics, although young, the athlete has good odds on his side, he’ll be up against the best in the world and he’ll need a super human performance to topple Van Niekerk.

Isaac Makwala – Withdrew from Race – Food Poisoning
The man from Botswana ran 44.30 to qualify for the final race. Makwala recorded his best time of 43.72 seconds in 2015 and finished 5th place in the 4 x 400 m relay in the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games.
