RWC 2019: Backs to Watch

RWC 2019: Backs to Watch

With just over two months to go until the start of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Shaun Goosen selects several backs he thinks will make a big statement at the tournament.

Sbu Nkosi (South Africa)
The 97kg Sharks flyer has often drawn comparisons with JP Pietersen for his solid defensive capabilities and raw physicality. Nkosi enjoyed a breakout year in 2018, cementing his place on the Springboks’ right wing with a number of outstanding showings. Also possessing a fantastic aerial game and deceptive acceleration, the 23-year-old will look to remain steadfast in the Boks’ starting lineup as they attempt to pull off what would be a miraculous World Cup win.

Bundee Aki (Ireland)
The 29-year-old New Zealand-born centre has been a revelation for Joe Schmidt’s side since debuting against South Africa in 2017. Combining pace and power with a good reading of the game, perhaps the biggest complement one could pay Aki is that his continued excellence often means one of either Garry Ringrose or Robbie Henshaw miss out in the Irish midfield. Playing in settled team with clear expectations of what is required of him, expect Aki to leave a mark in Japan one way or the other.

Owen Farrell (England)
Farrell has long been a match-winner for club and country, helping them lift virtually all on offer over the past several seasons. Now international captain, he has a golden opportunity to guide his England side to World Cup glory for the first time since 2003. Arguably one of the most technically gifted athletes in the game, Farrell’s astute tactical kicking and sound defence make him a menace to play against. He should be front and centre of everything England do at the global showpiece.

Finn Russell (Scotland)
Russell has always shown promise, but over the past 18-months he has taken his game to the next level. Touted as a potential Lions Test starter in 2021, the dexterous Racing 92 pivot will be key to unlocking one of the most talented backlines in the tournament in Scotland. When Russell is at his very best, he appears to have the ball on a string. If the Brave Hearts are to cause any upsets he will need to be on top form.

Liam Williams (Wales)
The Saracens outback is an early favourite for World Player of the Year after lifting Wales to a Six Nations Grand Slam before helping his club claim the Premiership and Champions Cup this season. Williams is a composed, balanced runner with ball in hand and his pace and guile from the back will be essential to his nation’s hopes of winning a first-ever World Cup title.
