Made In Denmark | Thursday 14 August – Sunday 17 August | Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort

The Majors are over and normalcy resumes on the European Tour as it heads to Denmark for the inaugural Made In Denmark. This is only the second event staged by the Tour in Denmark, which is surprising considering the number of talented young golfers coming out of the country. It’s one that golf fans should keep a close eye on as, by all accounts, the Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort will pose a serious challenge. The links style layout of the course features quick greens and thick rough and measures in at just under 7,100 yards. With that in mind it makes sense to stay away from the big hitters and focus on players who rank high in accuracy off the tee and GIR%. Putting will also be crucial on the challenging surfaces. The field drawn is pretty much what you’d expect for a tournament hosted a week after a Major, on a weekend that has traditionally been used as a break by the Tour. A lot of the big names are missing but there are a few who have chosen to bite the bullet, including the erratic but talented Thomas Bjorn and the sometimes hot, sometimes not, Thorbjorn Olesen.

To Win Outright
Thomas Bjorn  12/1
Kristoffer Broberg  22/1
Thorbjorn Olesen  22/1
Chris Wood  25/1
Anders Hansen  28/1

VALUE BETS
David Howell (45/1 a win, 10/1 a place)
David Howell opened at 55/1 but that price was gone in a flash, as shrewd punters out there hopped on as soon as the betting opened. Nevertheless, 45/1 is still a great price on the Englishman. The weekend weather forecast for this tournament is looking pretty dismal and David Howell will be as confident as any other player in this field playing in wet and windy conditions. He also showed that despite an up-and-down few years, he still has what it takes to win on a links course, winning the Dunhill Links Championship a few months ago. Each way on Howell is the bet for me.

Lucas Bjerregaard (50/1 a win, 11/1 a place)
Lucas Bjerregaard is playing in his maiden season on the Tour and as yet has done little to impress but this is his home course and he should be looking forward to using that local knowledge to his advantage. Whilst he has only finished inside the Top 10 on the Tour once, that being in the Africa Open when he finished ninth,  he came agonisingly close to doing it again in March when he finished eleventh in the Trophee Hassan II. The field that has assembled here resembles the one he faced in Africa so he should have a real chance of a Top 5 finish this week. Oh and it’s his birthday on Thursday…if that’s not a good omen then I don’t know what is.

Soren Kjeldsen (60/1 a win, 13/1 a place)
I’m expecting the local lads to have strong claims here so my next tip is another Dane, Soren Kjeldsen. He showed in 2013 that he enjoys these links layouts and his game looked on song a few weeks ago in France, when he finished inside the Top 20. He managed to do so well over there due to his incredible accuracy off the tee and if he can find the fairways here there’s no reason he won’t make a lot of birdies. For a player as deadly with his irons as Kjeldsen, 60/1 is a huge price. Get on.

TOP BET: Marc Warren (28/1 a win, 62/10 a place)
Despite the fact that he is still in his early thirties, Marc Warren seems to have been competing on the European Tour forever. Despite his experience, this season has been fairly quiet for the Scot and he currently finds himself 33rd in the Tour rankings. This is due in part to how incredibly inconsistent he is and although he was great in the Scottish Open, where he finished third, leading up to that he rarely found himself inside the Top 20. I’m making him my top bet this week due in part to that performance but mainly because he will be full of confidence after his performance in the PGA Championship. Each way on Warren looks a great bet, get on!
