We take a look at the betting for this week’s European Tour event, the Open de France, taking place at Le Golf National.
The Open de France celebrates it’s 100th anniversary this week and the European Tour is pulling out all the stops to make sure the tournament is a memorable one.
Played at a future Ryder Cup venue just weeks before the British Open, the tournament has managed to reclaim some of Europe’s biggest players from the grip of the PGA Tour.
Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Danny Willett will all tee it up at Le Golf National this week, where they head up the betting. McIlroy comes in at the ludicrously short price of 9/2, which has a knock-on effect on the odds.
Apart from Martin Kaymer, the rest of the field are 20/1 and over, which means there’s huge value to be found. Fresh off a winning week at the BMW Champs in Germany, I’m going all out to make sure we keep the good times rolling.

From the rough
Thongchai Jaidee (60/1 Win & 16/1 Place)
Last week it was a Thai golfer that brought home the biggest price as “The Barnrat” notched up a fifth-placed finish at 18/1 odds. I’m staying true to the Thai people this week, where Jaidee makes my selection. Tenth last year, the seven-time European tour winner was runner-up the year before. After missing the cut in his first two appearances at Le Golf National he has made the weekend in six of his next eight visits to Paris. He has the perfect strategic game to tame this tough course and is well worth the each-way punt.
James Morrison (70/1 Win & 15/1 Place)
A great putter when he’s in the mood, Morrison has some impressive recent performances including a 4th in Austria, T10 in Ireland and T4 in Spain. Throw in a solo second here last year and a T7 in 2011 and the 70/1 is starting to look a gift. One drawback is his withdrawal after the first round in Germany last week, but as Stenson showed with his victory, it could be a good omen.
Paul Dunne (150/1 Win & 33/1 Place)
It’s been quite a past few days for Dunne, who has gone somewhat off the radar following his amazing showing at the British Open last year. After finishing T13 at the BMW International in Germany, Dunne dominated the Open qualifying for the third straight year to book his place at Royal Troon. He may have played plenty golf in a short period of time, but he’s clearly in a good vein of form. There’s more to come from the 23-year-old Irishman – of that I have no doubt – and if it’s this week there’ll be dancing in the streets of County Wicklow.
Horse for the course
Martin Kaymer (16/1 Win & 7/2 Place)
Last week’s “horse for the course” did me well as perennial underachiever Henrik Stenson finally picked up a win. Kaymer is a similar selection in many ways. He hasn’t won in almost two years and has a stellar record at this course. The German has five top-10’s in Paris from nine starts with a win in 2009. He was co-leader after 36 holes in 2015 and finished solo fourth. Kaymer has shown glimpses of his best form in recent times with three top ten finishes in his last four starts so don’t be surprised if the Dusseldorf native is knocking on the door come Sunday evening.
