While the world’s gaze is firmly fixed on Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, Durban recently experienced some hot competition of its own, with the Hollywood Bunny Bar scooping a couple of medals.
The annual Best of Durban Readers’ Choice Awards, now in its third year, attracted close to half a million votes from the citizenry: a clear reflection of just how passionate the denizens of Durban are about their favourite service providers.
Consequently, a win or a top-three place for a local business represents a resounding endorsement of the special place they hold in eThekwini’s heart.
Of course no “Durban Olympics” is complete without several categories for curry. In particular, those involving the iconic Bunny Chow, a world-renowned culinary innovation synonymous with the city. There are thousands of take-aways in eThekwini where you can sink your teeth into a bunny chow of every style and flavour, from a mild quarter-beans to a fire-breathing half-mutton.
Although no two bunnies are created alike, those produced by The Hollywood Bunny Bar in Springfield have acquired a legendary status all of their own. The recipe, a closely-guarded family secret handed down through the generations, has clearly hit Durban’s sweet spot. Or, more accurately, its hot spot.
In the fiercely contested “Best Take-Away”, Hollywood Bunny Bar took first place whilst also scooping second for “Best Bunny Chow” and third for “Best Indian Restaurant”. Viewed through an Olympics lens, if the Bunny Bar was a country, it would have won Gold, Silver and Bronze in the three categories it entered. And that’s against some of the stiffest competition on the planet. Not too shabby!
Whilst bunny chows are unlikely to feature in The Olympic Games themselves, being recognised as Official Bunny Chow Champion in the city where the bunny was born is an achievement we are immensely proud of. Hats off to all the dedicated Team Members involved in reaching this magnificent milestone.
