International Racing: Happy Valley – Wednesday 13 May 2020

A competitive nine-race programme is scheduled for Happy Valley on Wednesday. The best bet on the night is COMPASSION SPIRIT who is in Race 4. He got back to winning ways under a confident ride by Zac Purton over this course and distance last time. He races in the same company tonight and has a good chance of notching up a double.

After a treble at Sha Tin on Sunday, Joao Moreira is now only one winner behind Purton in the Jockey’s Championship. While the latter only has six rides tonight, the former who has a full card will be looking to match or even go better by the end of the meeting.

Race 1
An open looking contest starts off tonight’s programme and caution is advised. The narrow first selection is JUNZI who is much better than his recent form suggests. He has had excuses at the start in his last three outings. With a bit of luck in running early, he may find himself in a more prominent position turning for home. It is encouraging that jockey Neil Callan steps back aboard the son of Red Giant as he has been aboard him in two of his three wins to date. THE ABRAXAS has not finished too far off the winner in his last three starts. He moved up well in his last effort over this course and distance before staying on at the finish. Joao Moreira steps back into the saddle this evening and the pair should pose a threat to the top selection. GALAXY RACER’S last four starts have been decent. He should have finished closer to the winner in his last two outings as he was crowded at crucial stages in the race. It is interesting that he drops back to the six furlongs, but with a bit of luck in running he can run into the money here.

Race 2
STAR MAJESTIC could give jockey Neil Callan a quick double to start off the meeting. He never got into the race last time as he raced three-wide around the turn. The run that catches the eye is when finishing second over this course and distance on 3 March. If finding the form of that race today, he may be the one they all have to beat. SUMSTREETSUMWHERE has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. The manner in which he stayed on at the finish in his last start was encouraging. Zac Purton who has finished third aboard the son of Highly Recommended in the past, steps back in the saddle tonight and the pair should be right there in the run down to the finishing post. HOME MADE is slowly showing signs of returning to best form. The manner in which he has rallied in his last two starts under tonight’s apprentice Dylan Mo has been eye-catching. He is likely to adopt the same tactics this evening and in this type of field, should earn a cheque.

Race 3
VICTORIOUS LEADER is the value bet on tonight’s programme. He ran a fair race at Sha Tin over seven furlongs in his last start. However, his penultimate run was eye-catching. He settled near the rear of the field over this course and distance and finished his race off well. He gets the services of jockey Antoine Hamelin who is no stranger to the winner’s box since arriving in Hong Kong. From his wide barrier position, he will be mowing down the frontrunners in the run down to the wire. AURORA STEED was a tad disappointing in his last start over this course and distance when producing a one-paced finish. Joao Moreira steps back into the saddle this evening and from pole position, on best form shown should throw out the biggest challenge to the top choice. FOX CHEUNGER should have finished closer to the winner in his last start. He was crowded at the 450m mark and hampered at the 200m mark that day. Jockey Matthew Chadwick knows the son of Hussonet well and with a bit of luck in running, he should be involved in the fight out to the finish.

Race 4
COMPASSION SPIRIT is the best on the card this evening. He was an impressive winner in his last start over this course and distance. He was bumped at the start but recovered well before picking up the lead at the 250m mark and drawing off for the victory. Jockey Zac Purton retains the ride this evening and with a bit of luck in running, the pair should notch up a double. HAPPY TANGO caught the eye when running on strongly to finish a short-head second in his last start. He has had no luck with regards to draws recently and has another wide barrier position to overcome tonight. However, Chad Schofield knows the son of Eavesdropper well and the pair will be mowing down the frontrunners in the run down to the finishing post. MASTER ALBERT has not had much luck in running in his last two starts and he will enjoy jumping from a better barrier position tonight. Antoine Hamelin rides the son of Magic Albert for the first time and if everything goes according to plan, he should have a decent shout of running into the money here.

Race 5
WE THE SOUTH got back to winning ways in his last start when going from pillar to post. That was his first start under jockey Vagner Borges and if showing the same amount of speed today, he has a good chance of notching up a double. FORZA ANGEL has been disappointing in recent outings, but he could be the one to cause the upset. He has been showing pace in his races over further recently and will enjoy the drop back to the minimum trip tonight. He has won once and finished third once from five attempts over this distance. With a bit of luck in running, he may be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection. WINNING WAYS should have finished closer to the winner in his last two starts. He was crowded at the 250m mark last time but boxed on well in the closing stages. His record over this distance is decent having won once, finishing second twice and third twice from eight attempts. Joao Moreira takes the ride for the first time and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.

Race 6
Another competitive contest on tonight’s programme and caution must be taken. The tentative first choice is BEAUTY AMIGO from the John Moore stable. He was a tad disappointing in his last start, but the manner in which he won his penultimate start over this course and distance was eye-catching. With a bit of luck in running from his wide barrier position, he may be the one they have to get past tonight. SMART LEADER’S last start was fair after finishing under a length behind the winner in his penultimate start. Joao Moreira has a decent record aboard the son of Delago Deluxe having won once and finished third twice from four starts. From his handy draw of two, he should be right there in the run down to the finishing post. JUMBO HAPPINESS’ last two starts over this course and distance have been fair. He stayed on at the business end of his last outing after being crowded in the early stages of the race. Neil Callan retains the ride this evening and the pair cannot be ignored in this type of field.

Race 7
VICTORIAM’S last start over this course and distance was fair. He was an impressive winner of his penultimate outing over this distance at Sha Tin. The son of I Am Invincible has a much better barrier position this evening and with Zac Purton in the saddle, he looks to be the one to side with here. HALL OF CHAMP has fair recent form to his credit. He set the pace in his last start over a mile and produced a one-paced finish. On that outing, it suggests that he will enjoy the drop back to the six furlongs. The son of Dark Angel makes his course debut this evening and if suited to the track, he should be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top choice. SHAMPORT’S last three starts have been good. The manner in which he rallied to finish fourth in his latest outing was eye-catching. He has won three times and finished third twice from nine outings over this course and distance. Vincent Ho has ridden the son of Shamardal to victory twice and the pair must be included in all bets tonight.

Race 8
WORLD FAMOUS took on much stronger in his last start and quickly drops back in class this evening. He has won twice and finished second once from five attempts over this distance. Jockey Vincent Ho knows him well and from his handy draw of two, the combination should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. BLASTOISE has good consistent form lines to his name. He raced from a mid-field position in his last start over this distance at Sha Tin and finished his race off well. Jockey Antoine Hamelin rides the son of Ambidexter for the first time and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most. ABOVE handled the rise in class in his last start well. He moved up very well that day but just ran out of puff in the final 100m. Joao Moreira who has ridden him four times for two wins and a third-place finish steps back into the saddle and if repeating his penultimate outing when winning by six lengths, he should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.

Race 9
DELIGHTFUL LAOS was ultra-impressive when winning over this course and distance on debut. He finished his race off strongly to take the lead at the 50m mark before drawing off at the finish. The son of Baltic King would have come on from the experience and with the natural progression that is expected, he should have more to come. It is encouraging that trainer Tony Cruz has kept Derek Leung aboard this evening. From his mid-field barrier position, he should take a power of beating. BEST ALLIANCE has good consistent form lines to his name. He was hampered at the 1000m in his last start, but the manner in which he rallied up the straight was encouraging. He gets the services of claiming apprentice Alfred Chan and with a bit of luck in running, he should be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection. TANGMERE is a winner of his last two starts over this course and distance. He runs well for tonight’s pilot Zac Purton as he has won twice and finished second once from four starts. From pole position, he has a good chance of notching up the hat-trick this evening.
