Neil Morrice Best Bets

Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips from Ripon, Hamilton Park, and Kempton Park and New Abbot on Tuesday 1 September 2020.

RIPON

Race 1: No2 – RISK OF THUNDER (Nap)
Trainer: James Tate – Jockey: Danny Tudhope

Hugely impressive when opening her account here back in June, RISK OF THUNDER signalled with a near-miss at Catterick last time that she’s on the cusp of a return to winning ways. The Night Of Thunder filly went down by a neck to Cream Of The Crop, having started favourite for a Listed race on her other subsequent outing. She is down in class for this novice.

Race 4: No5 – CHALLET
Trainer: Michael Dods – Jockey: Paul Mulrennan

Clodovil gelding CHALLET likes to get his toe into the ground, as demonstrated by his cosy success in a first-time hood at Thirsk at the end of July. He sprang a 20-1 surprise on that occasion and can show it was no fluke by following-up in a contest in which most of his rivals are out of form.

HAMILTON PARK

Race 2: No3 – TWO COP BOP (Nap)
Trainer: Kevin Ryan – Jockey: Kevin Stott

TWO COP BOP ran a cracker when touched off in a similar race here last month, displaying improvement from his previous two starts. He started a heavily bet favourite, and with today’s step up in trip a boon can be backed to recoup those losses.

Race 6: No11 – AYR POET
Trainer: Jim Goldie – Jockey: S Kirrane

The ultra-consistent AYR POET gained a deserved first win of the year in an apprentice race at Ayr last month following three straight seconds, two of which happened here. With his tail up and conditions again in his favour he stands out as the one to beat.

KEMPTON PARK

Race 3: No4 – LOCAL LAW (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick

LOCAL LAW was on the learning curve when making his introduction at Newmarket when running green. The son of Dubawi attracted a wave of support to start a shade of odds-on but never threatened to get to grips with the winner Magellan. Such has been the standard of his subsequent work that he can show those losses to be merely lent.

Race 6: No12 – CLOG MAKER
Trainer: Mark Johnston – Jockey: William Buick

Buick has a good record for this stable and looks to have come in for another plum ride on hat-trick seeking CLOG MAKER. The Dark Angel colt has been an authoritative winner of both outings this year on Polytrack, including when breaking his maiden here in February. As a heavily backed favourite he smoothly followed-up in a Lingfield novice and looks the type to do well in handicaps.

NEWTON ABBOT

Race 3: No14 – DUBAI OUTLAW (Nap)
Trainer: D Jeffreys – Jockey: Kieran Woods

DUBAI OUTLAW landed some good bets in cosy fashion at Fontwell when returning from a protracted break. He looked a different horse, and from his position at the base of the weights could still be a blot on the handicap in spite of a 6lb rise.

Race 6: No6 – MAGICAL THOMAS
Trainer: Neil Mulholland – Jockey: Tom Scudamore

MAGICAL THOMAS was ultimately beaten a long way in a handicap hurdle here last month but would have finished closer but for two costly mistakes just as the race was starting to develop. He gets plenty of weight from his foes and if getting into a rhythm from the front could prove hard to peg back.
