Sponsored Trainers Comments – Durban July 2017

We spoke to the trainers that are proudly sponsored by Hollywoodbets and Winning Form to get their views on who will win the 2017 Vodacom Durban July.

Hollywood sponsored trainer Garth Puller, who knows more about winning the July than a large number of the jockeys riding in the race, gave these 4 as his main hopes for the race.” His exact words were, “Be with me, Black Arthur, I tipped him to win last year and this time around he will do it.” He feels that Edict of Nantes, The Conglomerate and Al Sahem will follow his first selection home.

Port Elizabeth trainer Grant Paddock is always a pleasure to talk to. Now that his first choice Elusive Silva has been scratched his selections for Saturday’s July are Ten Gun Salute, Al Sahem and  Edict Of Nantes.

Gauteng based trainer Paul Matchett is another whose yard is sponsored by the country’s number 1 bookmaker.  When asked what he thought the July result could be he had no hesitation saying “Edict Of Nantes, Ten Gun Salute and Al Sahem.”

Winning Form sponsored trainer Duncan Howells is now firmly established as one of KZN’s top trainers and with two runners in the July the Greyville grandstand is sure to shudder if one of his pair wins. “My two horses are very well and I think Ten Gun Salute will beat It’s My Turn, The Conglomerate and Saratoga Dancer home,” said Duncan bullishly.

The newest trainer to join the Hollywood sponsored trainer’s list is Corne Spies who had the following to add, “My July fancies are Ten Gun Salute, It’s My Turn, Saratoga Dancer, Al Sahem , Nightingale and Edict Of Nantes.” That was in no order of preference so perhaps the boxed quartet is the way to go if one is to follow the Vaal based conditioner’s selections.

Alyson and her husband Kevin Wright’s yard has been sponsored by Hollywood for roughly two years and after much deliberation the pair decided the following. “The Conglomerate, Al Sahem, It’s My Turn, Ten Gun Salute and Edict Of Nantes are the five we think will fit the bill,” of course the woman (Alyson) having the final say.

Hollywood sponsored trainer Gary Rich does have history in the race. His father Des Rich trained Lightning Shot to win the race in 1977. When asked for his fancy on Saturday, Gary said he liked Al Sahem, It’s My Turn and Ten Gun Salute. We are really hoping for a KZN trained winner”, said Gary.
Heather Adamson is the second of the Hollywood sponsored female trainers and the Vaal based conditioner added, “My fancies for the July are Marinaresco , Black Arthur and Brazuca in that order.”

Nothern Cape based Hollywood-sponsored trainer Cliffie Miller proudly carries the ‘purple flag’ in the city of diamonds. He is always a pleasure to speak to and he said he thought this year’s July was quite straight-forward. “I think the result will be Ten Gun Salute, The Conglomerate, Black Arthur and Edict of Nantes,” he said confidently.

Riaan van Reenen and his great friend Carl Burger train in partnership in the Western Cape and is yet another acquisition to the Hollywood ranks. He was supremely confident that Edict Of Nantes will win. “In all honesty this is not a race. All they will see of Edict Of Nantes is his backside going further and further in front. When pushed for a second and third Riaan said Marinaresco and French Navy (because his trainer is in deadly form) and further than that he only wanted to talk about Edict Of Nantes.”
