SAMMI MOOSA showed smart improvement in a similar maiden field second time out. She was running on at the finish for 4th, beaten just under three lengths over the seven furlongs at Turffontein and should continue to progress. The three-year-old bay filly should enjoy the likely solid gallop and she merits healthy respect. The slight concern is that she races down the straight for the first time in her short career.
Race 2: SHOTGUN RIDER(1)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Roy MAGNER
There are some decent form contenders in this eight-horse field and an exciting finish is expected. SHOTGUN RIDER showed smart juvenile form last campaign and he appears the most progressive. He would have strengthened during the 12-week break and certainly has more to offer this term. The bay colt has track experience and he races fresh so this trip won’t be an issue.

REFUGE is above-average and he confirmed his debut promise when challenging strongly before finishing a close 2nd at Turffontein, second time out. Interestingly, the 3rd placed finisher of his debut run Ronin Warrior has won twice since. This son of Toreador should continue to improve and he is the clear first pick of the raced runners. He is also his trainer’s only representative on the card.
Race 6: LAKAHAL(7)
Jockey: Andrew FORTUNE – Trainer: Dianne STENGER
LAKAHAL had excuses for her below-par last performance but she had smart form at this level prior to that, including a close 2nd over this track & trip, three starts ago. She is her conditioner’s only runner on the card and can quickly make amends with top jockey Fortune engaged.

Race 8: TOM FOOL(4)
Jockey: Gunter WROGEMANN – Trainer: STEPHEN MOFFATT
There are quite a few natural frontrunners in this competitive low-key handicap and the likely strong gallop should suit TOM FOOL down to the ground. The five-year-old bay gelding has been thereabouts in much stronger company recently and he can take full advantage of a recent two-pound drop in his rating. He has posted both his career victories on this track and represents decent each/way value.
