Race 5

OUTBACK CRUMPET is seldom far off the action and was returning from a 16-week rest when finishing fifth last time out over 1400M, just over two lengths back from the winner, but she was hampered at the 200M mark that day and should have finished closer to the winner than she officially did. She gets a handy draw four and with better luck in running, he looks to be the one to side with here and is taken to be the value bet on the day’s card.

MOON ZONE followed up her penultimate run victory over 1400M with a second-place finish next time out when dropping down to 1000M, 5.3L back from the winner. She was returning from a longer 26-week break and sat just behind the leaders that day, before battling all the way down to the wire. The filly is drawn one outside the top pick and will have 3kgs taken off her back thanks to her claiming apprentice and should be right up there when they hit the line.

D’ARPANO raced in second place the whole way round, but was unable to run down the winner when finishing second last time out over 1300M, 1.8L back from the victor. She faces a wideish draw eight, but on the plus side, she will have 3kgs removed from her allocated weight courtesy of her claiming apprentice.

Race 6

This looks to be a tricky race with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. FIFTY FIVE MUSTANG has consistent formlines to his name and followed up his penultimate run victory over 1200M with a sixth-place finish next time out over the 1300M, just under a length back from the winner, but it should be noted that he lost a length at the start and had to be eased at the 800M mar, so he had his excuses. The gelding has a useful draw three and should turn in another honest performance here.

ISLAND LEGEND has cracked pole position and has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three starts, the latest when fourth over 1200M, 1.2L behind the winner. He chased hard in that event and with the services of a 3kg claiming apprentice, he will be hoping to chalk up his third career victory.

MAGNUS RED overraced throughout when ending up in eighth place last time out over 1200M, 2.7L off the winner. He on the other hand jumps from a wide gate thirteen, but he is a speedy sort who should be able to move across without expending too much energy.

Race 7

This appears to be another difficult race with lots of runners in with a squeak of winning, so some care is advised. The tentative top pick goes to OSMAN who won his penultimate start over 1200M and then finished third next time out over 1400M, 3.3L adrift of the winner, but he had to be steadied off the heels of another runner at the 200M pole on that occasion, but then finished well once in the clear. The gelding will be having his peak run after returning from a 12-week rest and will have 2kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice. He is sure to put his pole position to good use.

LA SANTE also won his penultimate start, but in his case over 1400M and then finished third next time out over 1000M, just under a length back from the winner, when having his first run for his new trainer and returning from a 70-week spell. It should however be noted that he nearly fell at the start and came the widest of them all into the home stretch, so that effort is best ignored. The gelding has pulled a wideish gate eight, but the fact that his connections have brought him back into racing after such a lengthy absence would seem to suggest that they believe that he still has something more to offer them.

SMOOTH ESPRIT was slow away and raced in tight quarters in the home straight when ending up in seventh spot last time out over 1400M, just under four and a half lengths adrift of the winner. From his kinder draw two, he should be included in all bets.

Race 8

The day’s best bet, EVASIVE NATURE had his consistency rewarded after having finished second twice in his first two outings prior to claiming a one-and-a-half length victory last time out over 1000M. He showed plenty of toe that day and was immediately rested for 22 weeks. The gelding returns here without having had the benefit of a barrier trial, so his fitness will have to be taken on trust and he does have to negotiate a wide draw sixteen, but he clearly has some ability and could prove hard to topple.

LEGOLAS on the other hand has pole position and hit the front at the top of the home straight before not going on with his effort to finish eighth last time out over 1200M, 4.8L behind the winner and on that effort, he is sure to enjoy the drop in trip. The gelding returns from a 39-week break, but has had two barrier trials, finishing third in the latest and will be having his first run for his new trainer. If fully settled into his new surroundings, he should give a good account of himself here.

SPECK is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she raced three wide throughout and had to be eased at the 800M pole, but nevertheless went on to win by a neck on debut over 1000M, so that effort was encouraging. She would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected, she could be good enough to record a quick double. She faces a wide draw eleven, but will have 3kgs removed from her allocated weight thanks to her claiming apprentice.
