Race 7

SALTCOATS overraced and came four wide into the home straight, but stayed on well when finishing second last time out over 1300M, beaten just a neck, when returning from a 19-week break. The form of that race has been franked and from his handy draw two, he is taken to be the value bet on the day’s card.

MAKARENA is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she won over seven furlongs three runs back, finished second in her penultimate start over six furlongs and then fifth in her latest outing back over seven furlongs, 2.3L behind the winner. She raced three wide without cover that day but made good late progress over the closing stages. The filly has her peak run after returning from an 18-week rest and although drawn wide in gate nine, she should be right up there when they hit the line.

Although LES VAMPIRES is recorded as finishing eighth last time out over a mile, he was just a length and a half back from the victor and it should be noted that he jumped awkwardly, bumping another runner in that event. The colt will have to negotiate a wide gate twelve, but he should be doing his best work late.

Race 8

TROPICAL SQUALL put her disappointing penultimate start over 2500M firmly behind her when winning a Group 1 event next time out over seven furlongs, albeit by just a short-head. She was returning from a 16-week break on that occasion and went from jump to wire. From her wide draw seventeen, she is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today and could prove difficult to reel in over the latter stages.

ZOUGOTCHA was returning from a 22-week absence and jumped awkwardly bumping another runner, but finished off her race strongly to win her latest outing over 1300M by a length and the form of that race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning. She on the other hand has a cosy draw two and will be looking for her seventh career victory here.

KIMOCHI renews her rivalry with the top pick. She followed up her penultimate run victory over six furlongs with a seventh-place finish next time out over seven furlongs, 1.3L back from the winner in that same race mentioned above. She was crowded at the start in that event, but she does meet the top pick on 3kg better terms today, so there should not be much separating the pair when they arrive at the winning post. Although also drawn wide in gate fourteen, she gets the services of non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd, so she will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle and should be included in all bets.

Race 9

AMOR VICTORIOUS goes for his hat-trick after victories over seven furlongs and the latest over a mile by putting three lengths between himself and the opposition. The gelding went from gun to tape that day and from gate seven, the trio is very much on the cards.

DETONATOR JACK won his penultimate start over a mile and then finished seventh next time out over the same journey, just over two and a half lengths back from the winner and was immediately moved to a new yard and rested for 14 weeks. He has his first run for his new trainer, but has had three barrier trials, winning the latest and if fully settled into his new surroundings, he should give a good account of himself here, jumping from a useful gate four.

PHEARSON has won two of his last three starts, the latest over 1300M by a length. He was hampered at the start, but raced just behind the leaders, before striking the front at the top of the home straight and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. The gelding was returning from a 12-week rest that day and from one gate inside the latter, he should not be easily overlooked.

Race 10

The day’s best bet, TAVI TIME was returning from a 13-week rest when completing his hat-trick last time out over seven when trouncing the field by four lengths, despite hanging in down the home stretch. He has pulled gate five and could prove hard to topple.

GENTLY ROLLED is a 4-year-old filly taking on males, but she has her hat-trick run after two victories over 1300M, the latest by a short-head. She did not get the clearest of passages in the home straight that day, only seeing daylight at the 250M mark, but finished strongly to get up in the shadow of the post. From her handy draw three and with Zac Lloyd in the irons, she could be the biggest danger to the top pick.

WHINCHAT missed out on his hat-trick after victories over six furlongs and 1300M when finishing seventh last time out over 1300M, 3.7L behind the winner, but he jumped awkwardly in that event and overraced at the head of affairs, only to be run out of it late. The gelding gets a useful gate four and should be involved in the finish.
