Race 5

FOXWELL had his consistency rewarded with his maiden victory last time out over 1250M by two and a half lengths, despite coming three wide into the home straight. He struck the front at the 200M mark to win going away and whilst taking on stronger here and with a wideish draw eight, he will have 1.5kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice and is made the value bet on the day’s card.

FIOPROSPERO is seldom far off the action, finishing second last time out over 1900M, just a neck back from the winner, but he was hampered at the 50M mark that day and objected against the winner. This was however overruled, and the original result was left to stand. The gelding returns from an 18-week break, but has had the benefit of a barrier trial and from his handy draw three, he should be right up there when they hit the line.

PLUCKTEN followed up his penultimate run victory over 1350M with a fourth-place finish next time out over 1100M, just over four and a half lengths back from the winner, when returning from a 16-week rest. He was bumped at the start, but stayed on well over the closing stages. The gelding gets a wide draw eleven, but will have 3kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice and should be doing his best work late.

Race 6

This looks to be a tricky race with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. BLUE STEEL has cracked pole position and won his penultimate start over 1450m before finishing third next time out over 1400M, just over a length and a half back from the winner, but he was slow away in that event and hung in all the way down the home straight. He will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways today.

Two 3-year-old fillies could chase him home, with the slight preference going to MISS ITALIANA who has won two of her last four starts and followed up her penultimate run victory over 1600M with a second-place finish next time out over 1700M, beaten just a short-head. She raced up with the speed on that occasion and was only collared in the shadow of the post. The filly faces a wide gate nine, but she should use her early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy.

LAISVAS won over 1700M three runs back, finished third in her next two starts over 1600M, the latest just over two lengths behind the winner, but she had to weave her way through traffic down the home straight that day, so she had her excuse. From gate seven, she should be included in all bets.

Race 7

The day’s best bet, COMPELLING TRUTH goes for his hat-trick after two victories over 1000M, the latest when putting 5.8L between himself and the opposition, this despite him racing three wide without cover. He kicked clear of the field at the top of the home straight that day and the result was never in doubt from that point. The gelding has drawn gate seven and the trio is very much on the cards.

A 6-year-old and a 7-year-old mare could chase him home, with the slight preference going to TRANSPLANT who has consistent formlines to her name and although recorded as finishing sixth last time out over 1200M, she was just under two lengths off the winner. She overraced in the early and middle stages in that event, but still managed to stay on well over the latter stages. The mare gets a useful draw two and will get the services of a 3kg claiming apprentice.

MOETTA has posted two solid last runs and tried to go from gun to tape when ending up in fourth spot last time out over 1200M, 1.7L off the winner. She is drawn the widest of them all in gate fourteen, but she will have 3kgs taken off her back thanks to her claiming apprentice and is a speedy sort who should be able to work her way across without using up too much gas to be involved in the finish.

Race 8

SOMERTON SNIPER has only had three runs to date, winning the last two after finishing sixth on debut, the latest over 1000M by 1.3L, when returning from a 24-week spell. The gelding surged to the front at the 200M pole to win easing down at the line and the form of that race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning. He will have to deal with a wide gate nine, but he will be hoping to complete his hat-trick today.

BRITISH STATESMAN tried to go from jump to wire before being collared just short of the post to finish second last time out over 1100M, just a neck back from the winner. The gelding is drawn one outside the top pick and is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today in an attempt to go one better today.

PYROMANIA raced just behind the frontrunners before powering to the front at the entrance to the home straight and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire to win his last start over 1100 M by a neck. From gate five, he will be looking to chalk up his fourth career victory.
