Race 5

THOUSAND YEARS is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she has only had the three runs to date, finishing third on debut and then following up her penultimate run victory over 1500M with a second place finish last time out over seven furlongs, 2.3L behind the winner. She was slow away that day, but finished her race off strongly and the form of that contest has stood up well with three runners out of that race subsequently winning. From pole position, she should give the males a good run for their money.

PUBLICIST also won his penultimate start, but in his case, over seven furlongs and then finished sixth next time out when dropping down to six furlongs, 6.2L back from the winner, but he did jump awkwardly that day and did not act in the very heavy going, so that effort can be excused. He is drawn the widest of them all in gate nine, but he should improve on that last effort returning to what appears to be a more suitable trip.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE won over 1300M three runs back and took a bump at the start and was never really in the race when ending up in sixth place last time out over seven furlongs, 9.9L adrift of the winner, so that run is best ignored. The gelding gets gate five and will be looking to bounce back to his better form today and should be included in all bets.

Race 6

The day’s best bet BRILLAR had his consistency rewarded with his maiden win last time out over 1100M, albeit by just a head. He struck the front at the 350M mark that day and then fought off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire, despite shifting out slightly at the 100M pole. The objection lodged by the second horse for that movement was overruled and the result stood. He takes on stronger here, but gets a handy draw three and could give jockey Sam Clipperton the first two winners on the day’s Jackpot.

STAY WEALTHY was disappointing when finishing seventh in his latest outing over seven furlongs, just over eight and a half lengths behind the winner, but the vet reported that he was slow to recover that day, so that effort is best forgotten. His trainer is obviously happy with his progress and despite being drawn the widest in gate nine, he should be right up there when they hit the line.

DECADENT TALE is a 4yr old filly taking on boys, but she showed solid improvement to win her maiden race last time out over 1100M by 2.3L when returning from a 27 week break. She went from jump to wire that day and from a cozy gate four, she may prove difficult to reel in over the closing stages.

Race 7

This looks to be a tricky race with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. The tentative top choice goes to NEVER CRY who had his consistency compensated when winning his last start over 1300M by one length, notwithstanding being bumped and crowded down at the start. He hit the front at the 220M mark that day and then battled all the way down to the wire. He has cracked pole position and a repeat of that last effort could see him chalk up a quick double.

TICKET TO ANYWHERE won his penultimate start over six furlongs and then was bumped shortly after the start, but made good late progress to end up in second spot last time out over 1300M, one length off the winner. He has pulled a useful draw four and will get 2kg taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice to aid his cause.

GAME THEORY was seldom far off the action prior to winning his last start over six furlongs by half a length. He will have to overcome a wide gate ten, but he should be doing his best work late.

Race 8

COAL CRUSHER has consistent formlines to his credit, winning his latest start over 1300M by putting 4.3L between himself and the opposition and the form of that race appears to be strong, with four runners out of that contest subsequently winning. He returns from a 17 week rest, but has had the benefit of two barrier trials, finishing third in the latest. He jumps from gate two and retains the services of ex-SA jockey Glyn Schofield, who has his only ride on the day, but will nonetheless get all the necessary assistance from the saddle. As such, he is taken to be the value bet on the day’s program.

WAY TO THE STARS has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three runs, the latest when second over five furlongs, a half length adrift of the victor, this despite nothing go his way that day. He was slow away, hampered at the 600M mark, eased off the heels of other runners at the 250M pole and then only seeing daylight at the 200M mark, so he did well to finish as close to the winner as he did. The colt is sure to put his pole position to good use.

CASSY’S SISTER is a 5yr old mare taking on males, but she is another with consistent formlines to her name, winning her last outing over five furlongs by half a length when finding a powerful finish and the form of that race has been franked. She returns from a 13 week absence, but did finish third in her only barrier trial to prove her fitness. She will have to overcome a wide draw fourteen, but on the plus side, she will have 3kgs removed from her allocated weight courtesy of her claiming apprentice.
