Race 5

EUROMASTER finished second in his last two starts and raced three wide without cover, but stayed on well when finishing one length behind the winner last time out over 1400M. He returns from a 21-week break without having had the benefit of a barrier trial, so his fitness will have to be taken on trust, but he gets gate six and will have 4kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.

CALL ME GROUCHY has only had two runs to date, finishing fourth on debut over 1200M and then sixth next time out over 1300M, 4.78L adrift of the winner, but he hung out on the home turn that day and was hampered in the closing stages. The gelding would have come on further with that run under his belt and from a useful gate three, he should be right up there when they hit the line.

RED DUSTER is a 4-year-old filly taking on the boys and raced four wide with no cover when finishing eighth last time out over 1200M, just over four and a half lengths behind the winner and was immediately moved to a new yard and rested for 37 weeks. She returns her after having finished fifth in her only barrier trial and if fully settled into her new surroundings, she should give a good account of herself here, jumping from her handy draw four.

Race 6

ROCKIN’ MILLIE had her consistency rewarded with a one-and-a-half-length victory last time out over 1200M, this despite being slow away. She struck the front at the entrance to the home stretch in that event and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. The filly has pulled gate five and will have 3kgs removed from her allocated weight courtesy of her claiming apprentice.

FULD’S DOUBT followed up her penultimate run victory over 1100M with a twelfth-place finish next time out over the same c&d, just under six and a half lengths back from the winner, but it should be noted that she was hampered shortly after the start on that occasion, overraced in the early stages and then struck the heels of another runner at the 600M mark, so that effort is best ignored. She jumps from a wideish gate eight, but with better luck in running today, she should keep the top pick honest.

LITTLE BIT FLASH won over 1100M three runs back, finished fifth in her penultimate start over the same sprint trip and then fifth again in her latest outing over the same c&d, four lengths off the winner. She battled all the way down to the wire in that event and from her cosy draw four, she should be included in all bets.

Race 7

EYE OF THE FIRE had his consistency rewarded with a 1.8L victory last time out over 1100M, this after showing plenty of toe. He did shift out, bumping another runner at the 200M pole, but stayed on well over the latter stages. The gelding has a handy draw three and is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card in his attempt to chalk up his third career victory.

TAKING THE MIKKI has won two of his last three starts and finished third in the other. He raced just behind the frontrunners, before striking the front at the 100M mark to win his latest outing over 1200M by 2.3L going away. The gelding has his peak run after returning from a 16-week break and whilst drawn wide in gate twelve, he gets the services of non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd to aid his cause.

AMICUS CURIAE jumped awkwardly, but delivered a powerful finish to win his last start over 1200M by 0.8L. He returns from a 27-week spell, but did finish second in his only barrier trial to showcase his well-being. The gelding is not drawn that much better in gate ten, but on the plus side, he will have 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice and should be involved in the finish.

Race 8

The day’s value bet, THE ESCAPE has finished second in his last four runs, the latest over 1200M, one and a half lengths behind the winner, when returning from a 31-week spell. He tried to go from jump to wire that day, only to be snared late. The gelding does have to negotiate a wide draw ten, but will have 2kgs removed from his allocated weight thanks to his claiming apprentice and will be hoping to go one better here.

A 2-year-old and 3-year-old fillies could chase him home, with the slight preference going to WINNING PROPOSAL, who whilst taking on older horses, she has only had two runs to date, winning on debut over 1000M and then finishing fourth next time out over 1100M, one and a half lengths behind the winner. She raced green in the middle stages and then did not get the clearest of passages in the home straight that day, so she had her excuses. The filly will have to deal with a wide gate thirteen, but she could emerge as the biggest threat to the top pick. She does return from a 16-week rest, but has won her only barrier trial to prove her fitness.

RUSSIAN SNITZEL was returning from a 15-week rest when putting 2.3L between herself and the opposition to win her last start over 1000M. She has pulled a wideish gate eight, but she is a speedy sort who should be able to work her way across without using up too much gas.
