Race 5

EDGE OF REWARD had his consistency rewarded with a one-and-a-half-length victory last time out over seven furlongs, despite jumping awkwardly, bumping another runner and his jockey putting up 0.5kgs overweight. He struck the front at the 300m mark that day and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. The gelding has a wideish gate eight, but he could be good enough to chalk up a quick double and is taken to be the value bet on the day’s card.

GAGO followed up his penultimate run victory over 1300M with a sixth-place finish next time out over a mile, just under two lengths back from the winner, but he finished well from some way back that day. He gets a handy draw three and should be right up there when they hit the line.

SAILOR showed solid improvement to win his last start over a mile by a half-length. He had to be switched at the 350M mark to obtain a clear run, before going on to win going away. The form of that race has also been franked and from one gate outside the latter and with 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice, he should not be lightly dismissed.

Race 6

TRAJECTILE is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she put 2.8L between herself and the opposition to win her maiden race last time out over 1500M at the fifth time of asking, notwithstanding coming three wide into the home straight and the form of that race has been franked. She takes on stronger here, but will be having her peak run after returning from a 24-week break and from her useful draw three, she may well be up to the task at hand.

SO SLEEK is seldom far off the action, finishing fourth last time out over 2100M, three lengths back from the winner. He has his first run for his new trainer and if fully settled into his new surroundings, he should give a good account of himself here. Although facing a wide draw nine, on the plus side, he will have 3kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice and should be doing his best work late.

AWESOME TYCOON delivered a powerful finish to win his last race over a mile, albeit by just a short-head and the form of that race has been franked. The gelding is drawn one inside the latter and on that last effort, he should enjoy the extra ground on offer here.

Race 7

There are four unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connections believe that they can win first-time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, HYDROMETER may well prove to be the best. He showed plenty of toe when finishing third on debut over six furlongs, just over three lengths back from the winner. He would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected, he could be the one that they all have to beat. In addition, the gelding has a cosy draw two and could give jockey Lee Magorrian a double in the day’s Jackpot, should the top pick win the opening leg.

MOGUL MONARCH is a 2-year-old colt taking on older horses, but he finished second first time out over 1100M, 4.8L off the winner, but he jumped awkwardly in that event, bumping another runner and shifted out at the 25M mark, so he had his excuses. He faces a wide draw eleven, but he would have come on further with that run under his belt.

CAPTAIN FURAI has his first run, but has had the benefit of three barrier trials, winning the latest. He on the other hand has a handy draw three and gets the services of non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd to further aid his cause.

Race 8

Three 3-year-old fillies could fight out the finish to this race and complete the trifecta, but the day’s best bet, INQUISITIVE LEGEND is taken to lead the field home. She was returning from a 22-week rest when going from jump to wire to win her maiden race last time out over six furlongs by a length. That was just her third time out and whilst taking on stronger here, she jumps from gate seven and may prove hard to reel in over the latter stages.

LULUMON had finished second in her two outings before winning her last start over six furlongs by a short-head. She jumped awkwardly that day, bumping another runner and then came three wide into the home straight, but finished strongly for a well-timed victory. She will have to negotiate a wide draw nine, but she has her peak run after returning from a 19-week absence and could prove to be the biggest threat to the top choice.

SCHOLL DEEP in turn had finished third in her two runs prior to ending up in fourth place last time out over six furlongs, 1.2L off the winner, but she came three wide into the home straight that day and shifted in bumping another runner at the 50M pole. She will have to deal with a wide, but nevertheless should be involved in the finish.
