MADAM SECRETARY had to settle for another runner-up berth last Thursday and once again behind a smart first timer. The chestnut filly found the heavily supported Alileo too good for her on the day but the Mike Azzie inmate did well given that she had to overcome a wide stallgate. She is equally effective racing down the straight and has definite claims with Strydom retaining the ride.
Race 5: CATALUGA(3)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Scott KENNY
The bay mare CATALUGA reached a competitive merit rating and it showed when she only tired late in her much improved last outing over this trip in late January. She was rather surprisingly docked a pound in her rating despite the close-up effort and she is well handicapped against lesser rivals today. Her yard is in good form.
Race 6: REFUGE(1)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Scott KENNY
The smart Toreador gelding REFUGE returned to form with an eye-catching comeback sprint at Turffontein three weeks ago. He produced his late customary charge for 3rd behind subsequent winner Barbel Run and will strip fitter today. The bay gelding runs well for ‘Striker’ and the pair won a very good contest, also under a big mass over this c & d in soft conditioners in the Spring. He meets some hard-knocking older handicappers today but is progressive and could prove equal to the task.
Race 7: ASPRI ASTRAPI(9)
Jockey: Callan MURRAY – Trainer: Mike DE KOCK
This is a highly competitive low-key handicap where the three-year old ASPRI ASTRAPI could prove that he is better than his paltry merit rating of 70. The imported son of Fastnet Rock was a game debut winner over this c & d but then produced two moderate subsequent runs. However, the short break helped him as the bay gelding ran on strongly late to finish just out of the placings in a similar field over six furlongs a fortnight ago. That was his first try in blinkers and he now meets his conqueror CALL KELLY on 2.5kgs favourable terms for the two length defeat. The extra furlong should play right into his hands and he has room for improvement.

BRAVE MARY was drawn wide but she still made eye-catching late progress on her fair debut on the tight inside course at Turffontein last month. She finished just a short head adrift of FLYING FALCON that day & the well-related daughter of Brave Tin Soldier should make heaps of improvement. She represents decent each/way value on her first outing down the straight. She is favourably drawn and is her yard’s only entrant on the card.
