Gregor Townsend’s men shipped five tries in an eventual 32-3 loss that not only saw them drop below France into eighth on the World Rugby rankings, but which would have had a detrimental impact on their confidence heading into the World Cup, now a mere month away.

With two Tests against Georgia to come after this one, there really isn’t much time for Townsend to turn things around for the Brave Hearts. They need a massive improvement ASAP and that simply has to start in Edinburgh this weekend.

Meanwhile, France’s performance in Nice was a welcome return to form for the side that finished fourth at this year’s Six Nations.

While they were admittedly aided by a poor showing on defence from the Scots, their accuracy with ball in hand was refreshing while their decision-making – with Camille Lopez back at flyhalf – was top-drawer.

Consistency, though, certainly is the only currency that matters and they will need to ensure they produce similar displays every week at the World Cup.

Verdict: Scotland by five or more
That said, Scotland are a proud team and will feel better equipped playing at home. It will be a tight contest but the hosts should bounce back to claim a narrow win.
