The Eagles fell to a narrow 20-22 loss to Romania in Chicago on the weekend in newly appointed Scott Lawrence’s first game in charge. The match also marked the USA’s first international at home since 2022 as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for a spot at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

With experienced England defence coach Nick Easter and Bristol Bears flyhalf AJ MacGinty on their books, the side does have some tier one experience to draw on, but it’s unlikely to be enough to produce a repeat of their famous 30-29 win over the Scots back in 2018.

For Gregor Townsend, this Test in Washington will again be about blooding the next generation of talent. His men made light work of Canada in Ottawa last week in a 73-12 win that featured a whopping 10 debutants in the matchday squad with many of those same players likely to get another opportunity on Saturday.

Hollywoodbets Sharks loose forward Dylan Richardson grabbed two tries on his long-awaited return to the Scotland lineup and could yet become a regular in their squad over the course of the next World Cup cycle. Injuries have plagued the dogged 25-year-old’s progress during his early years as a professional, but there’s every reason to believe he still has a bright future ahead of him.

USA will have the backing of the home support but Scotland will be far too strong for them come kick-off time.

Verdict: Scotland on the minus

The Scots to pick up their second big win of the July internationals in Washington this weekend. The Europeans should be able to clear a handicap of around 35 points with minimal fuss.
