According to Rapport, Masuku could even be in the mix for the flyhalf spot in the Springboks’ season opener against Wales at Twickenham in June, especially as the match falls outside the official Test window and many of the Boks will be unavailable, either due to overseason playing commitments or their participation in the URC playoffs.

Masuku has played a key role in the resurgence of the Sharks, particularly in the Challenge Cup where he kicked his side into the final with a 22-point haul against Clermont at Twickenham Stoop.

Those efforts came after several other man-of-the-match performances which showcased that Masuku is not just a threat when kicking at goal but also in open play where he has showcased some stunning offloads and cross-kicks.

Sharks coach John Plumtree is understandably excited about what he’s seen from the 27-year-old this season.

“He has played well on the big stage, I’m really happy for him,” he said.

“Very humble character, he feels very honoured to be playing for the jersey, and he’s making the most of his opportunity.

“He’s still going to get better, his skill sets will improve; his passing game needs to improve, needs to improve as an athlete. He hasn’t reached his ceiling yet.

“He’s a confident little player, his kicking has been great, when he goes for a touch kick he doesn’t go for 30m, he goes for 40m.

“I love his attitude around the game, and the players also like him. He’s riding the crest of a wave at the moment, he’s hanging on.”
