Sporting athletes from various sporting codes

Zlatan scores hat trick after trash talk, Akani Simbine wins Diamond League 100m race, Manny Pacquiao and Kieth Thurman put on a boxing spectacle and we wrap up the Rugby Championships in this past weekend’s five talking points.

Zlatan scores hat trick after trash talk

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a hat trick of goals as he helped LA Galaxy win 3 – 2 against LAFC in the El Trafico derby. The Swede was earlier in the week quoted referring to himself as a Ferrari amongst Fiats in the MLS. But the 37 year old striker backed it up with a hat trick of goals.

Simbine runs sub 10  to win Diamond League 100m race

South African athlete Akani Simbine beat Yohan Blake to win the 100m  IAAF Diamond League event when he came in at 9.93 seconds

  1. Akani Simbine 9.93 SB
  2. Zharnel Hughes  9.95 SB
  3. Yohan Blake 9.97

South Africa clinical against Wallabies
South Africa opened their Rugby Championship campaign with a clinical win over Australia at Emirates Airline Park. Debutant Herschel Jantjies was named man of the match after a great display which saw the Western Province man score two tries. The nuggety scrum-half also performed his core duties with aplomb, delivering lightning-quick service from the base of the ruck and running slick support lines.
Australia were guilty of squandering some guilt edge opportunities with Samu Kerevi’s forward pass and Dane Haylett-Petty’s knock-on seeing two first-half tries go-a-begging.
It was a great game of rugby that has set up a good platform for the Boks ahead of Japan. A bonus-point win for the Springboks in New Zealand this weekend could see them win the shortened version of the 2019 Rugby Championship with a round to spare.

‘Rusty’ New Zealand win in Argentina

A weakened New Zealand got their Rugby Championship off to a shaky old start as they just managed to hold out for a 16-20 in Buenos Aires.

The All Blacks struggled to assert themselves in a dull match that saw an intercept try from Brodie Retallick as one of the few highlights. New Zealand led 9-20 at the break but failed to score any more points in the second half and were forced to hang on for a 16-20 win against a fired-up Argentina.

Los Pumas actually had a great opportunity after the sound of the hooter to build momentum from a lineout in the All Blacks 22 but the Kiwi forwards applied pressure from the resulting maul forcing the penalty and securing the victory.  A close call for the New Zealanders who will want to get a lot sharper ahead of the potential decider against the Springboks at the ‘Cake Tin’.

Manny Pacquiao and Kieth Thurman put on a boxing spectacle

Manny Pacquiao outscored American Kieth Thurman in a duel that went the distance and saw Pacquiao win by split decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  Two judges scored the fight at 115-112 to Pacquiao, while the final judged it at 114-113 to Thurman, for Pacquiao become the oldest welterweight champion in history.
