Federer crashes out of Australian Open
20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas made history and became the first Greek to reach the quarter-finals of a Slam after he put away defending champion Roger Federer 6-7 (11-13), 7-6 (7/3), 7-5, 7-6 (7/5).
Tom Brady fires Patriots into third consecutive Super Bowl
The New England Patriots will face the Los Angeles Rams on the 3rd of February after an over time touchdown gave the Patriots a 37 – 31 win over Kansas City.
This will be the 53rd edition of the Super Bowl and Tom Brady will feature in a record ninth appearance as the Patriots go in search of their third title in five years.
Lambie Retires due to multiple concussions
Pat Lambie who, played 56 Tests for the Springboks, announced his retirement from all rugby on the 19th of January following medical advice from neurologists. Lambie has suffered several concussions in his career with the most serious of these coming in a Springbok jumper as CJ Stander’s hip crashed into the fly-half’s head at Newlands. Lambie recently played for Racing 92 in the French Top 14 retires at the age of 28.
Sundowns beat Wydad in CAF encounter
Sundowns beat Wydad Casablanca 2-1 in the CAF Champions League on Saturday evening. Themba Zwane netted a brace to sink the North African giants. The game will be remembered more for Pitso Mosimane’s incredible post-match rant directed toward clubs from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisa and Algeria. Sundowns will now play ASEC Mimosas in their next encounter on the 2nd of February.
Manny Pacquiao beats Adrien Broner
Manny Pacquiao retained his WBA welterweight title at the MGM Arena after he beat American challenger Adrien Broner by unanimous decision. Pacquiao’s hand speed got the better of Broner who hardly landed any shots throughout the match. Broner confidently stated after the bout that he thought he had won, much to the dismay to the fans of the Filipino hero.
