Absa Premiership: Midweek Preview

Kaizer Chiefs missed out on a great opportunity to stretch the gap to eight points at the top in their game against Stellenbosch. Their dismal form continued in the first half when Lelethu Skelem scored from close range which Lazarous Kambole later cancelled. To pile things on, Amakhosi will be without top scorer Samir Nurkovic when they face Mamelodi Sundowns and their second scorer Leonardo Castro is a major doubt. Can Pitso Mosimane finally catch Chiefs? Let’s find out what this week has in store for us.

Monday 24 August

Maritzburg United  26/10
Draw 33/20
Bidvest Wits  27/20
Maritzburg were flying high before football was halted due to COVID-19. The Team of Choice didn’t start too well, losing to Black Leopards 3-2 and went on to draw 2-2 with Mamelodi Sundowns. While they missed out on the CAF spots, they have surely built up hopes for their upcoming season, and the team will surely hope to close out the remaining four games with a few more victories.

The Students, on the other hand, are in the top tier of the table and have been delivering decent performances despite the team being sold. Wits still have an outside chance for the league but that would mean winning all their remaining five games and hope Chiefs and Sundowns continue to drop points. Hard to separate the two teams so back a stalemate at 33/20.

AmaZulu 37/20
Draw 2/1
Bloemfontein Celtic 15/10
Bloem Celtic are running high on confidence at the moment. They took out Baroka from the Nedbank Cup with ease, and went on to thrash log leaders Kaizer Chiefs – thus becoming the only team this season to put six past Daniel Akpeyi.

Meanwhile, AmaZulu are going through a testing period. They are placed 16th in the table at the moment, and need to move away from that spot. Usuthu are level on 24 points with Polokwane City but because of their dreadful scoring record, they find themselves last. Back Celtic to add more misery on the KZN boys.

Mamelodi Sundowns 13/20
Draw 24/10
Golden Arrows 9/2
Mamelodi Sundiwns have drove themselves into a corner, and with just five fixtures remaining in the competition, their title hope looks kind of unlikely unless they can start winning games. They are currently in a position where the title is still somewhat in their hands. However, reality is that they are still six points behind Kaizer Chiefs but a win here will reduce the gap to three points and all eyes will be on Thursday’s humdinger when the two giants meet. Masandawana will be without suspended Andile Jali who was pivotal in midfield against Maritzburg and their regular centre-back Ricardo Nascimento. Mamelodi Sundowns are overdue a win and I do see them claiming maximum points in this encounter.

Tuesday 25 August

Black Leopards 9/2
Draw 24/10
SuperSport United 15/20

Black Leopards have done extremely well since football
returned collecting six points against Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows.
They are placed 13th in the table at the moment, and need to keep a hold of
that spot for two more game weeks.
SuperSport have four games remaining in the
league, and they need to build up lost confidence as well as to get back in
sync. It helps that they are taking on struggling teams in their remaining
fixtures. Hard to back against this
Leopards side so take Both Teams to Score here at 13/10.

Thursday 27 August

Kaizer Chiefs 13/10
Draw 22/10
Mamelodi Sundowns 2/1

Another demi-final the Absa Premiership has to offer in the closing stages of the season here. Both these teams are on the precipice of winning the league, and need a win in this crucial fixture in order to do that. As such, the winner of the league looks to be one of the two teams – provided Bidvest Wits drop points in one of their games, which they are expected to do so.
Both squads have enormous attacking talent at disposal, and will be unleashing all they have in search of the three points. Considering the pressure both teams are under, and the league title at stake, expect goals to come from both teams on Thursday night. Both Teams to Score looks like a sure bet here.

DOUBLE @ 3/1
Maritzburg vs Wits Draw @ 33/20
Mamelodi Sundowns vs Arrows Home Win @ 13/20
