Reflecting on the disappointing Afcon loss against Mali on Tuesday, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said the team’s performance was good but not good enough.

“I’d like to congratulate my team for today’s performance. The way we played the first half was very good. There were good combinations, there was depth in our game, and we had chances. I think the Mali coach saw what he had to do, and they came back stronger in the second half.

“We couldn’t catch up anymore and we lost the ball when we didn’t have to. That’s when they made their second goal, and it was over for us. But then again, I think the performance was good, but not good enough.” said Broos.

He said they lost the game because of Mali’s physical power in the second half and because of the penalty they missed.

Coach Broos stressed the fact that Bafana have to win their next match-up with Namibia to make it through the AFCON group stages.

“You know that if you don’t win the first game, you are in a very bad situation.  Therefore, it was very important to have a good result on the first match. Now we’re going to play against Namibia and we’re going to have to win that game. If we have a draw, it will be very difficult to get through the group stages, so we have to win that game.” said coach Broos.

He added that the team has the potential to win the game against Namibia if they play the way they played against Mali in the first half.
