Bafana Bafana – On the Cusp of Glory

Cape Verde and South Africa will both be on the on the hunt for crucial victories when they do battle in their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash inside the Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro Stadium on Saturday night.

Bafan Bafana have been improving each time they take to the field in this year’s tournament, and look a really confident outfit at this stage of the competition.

Their 2-0 win against Morocco in the round of 16 solidified their status as a proper dark horse, as they look good enough to take on any side left in the competition.

The last time they got the better of Cape Verde was a 2-1 win in a 2005 World Cup qualifier, but Bafana Bafana will still fancy their chances of advancing to the semis following some excellent results so far.

With a game against Nigeria waiting for them in the semis, Broos’ side needs no external motivation to secure a spot in the last four of the competition.

But the South Africans will have to be at their best to keep Cape Verde at bay.

With a win over Ghana and sharing the spoils against Egypt, Bubista’s troops should be brimming with confidence on Saturday night.

LAST MEETING

The last time these two sides met was way back in 2017 in a World Cup qualifier in Durban. Cape Verde won that match 2-1 as Bafana Bafana saw their World Cup dream dashed. They’ll be out to settle the score here.

Betting Odds

South Africa are priced up as favourites here, with most pundits expecting them to get the job done against the island nation. Take a look at the betting below. Remember, for your 90-minute bet to win, your chosen prediction must be correct when the referee blows the whistle for the end of regular time.

The “To Qualify” market offers you a bit more security, albeit at reduced odds. Here you can back either side to win the match, be it in normal time, extra-time (if the game ends in a draw) or in a penalty shootout.

To Win Match (90 mins)
Cape Verde 23/10 | Draw 21/10 | South Africa 12/10

 To Qualify
Cape Verde 12/10 | South Africa 6/10

PREDICTED LINE-UPS

I wouldn’t expect Broos to alter the backline that has kept three consecutive clean sheets against Namibia, Tunisia and Morocco, with captain Ronwen Williams keeping his place between the sticks.

Williams; Mudau, Kekana, Mvala, Modiba; Mokoena, Sithole; Morena, Zwane, Tau; Makgopa

For Cape Verde, former Manchester United forward Bebe, will likely line up in attack alongside record goalscorer and cap holder Ryan Mendes, 34, and Sporting CP winger Jovane Cabral.

Vozinha; Moreira, Costa, Lopes, Paulo; Monteiro, Pina, Duarte; Mendes, Bebe, Cabral

Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro Stadium

The facility was initially known as Stade de Yamoussoukro. In April 2023, it was decided to name it after Charles Konan Banny, the former Prime Minister of Côte d’Ivoire, who died in 2021 at COVID-19.

The stadium has a tartan athletics track, which is surrounded by a ring of stands. The pitch is equipped with a hybrid turf. The main stand, with facilities, offices, changing rooms, VIP area, press area, etc., has two storeys and is located on the west side.
