Pro Philani discusses Bafana Bafana’s chances of qualifying for the 2024 AFCON finals ahead of their must-win clash against Liberia - at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex on Tuesday.
As the national under-23 squad crashed out of the AFCON u/23 qualifiers which were going lead to Paris 2024 Olympics following a goalless draw against Congo-Brazzaville, South Africa are facing a toughest era in their football.
Although, at under 17 level, South Africa will be heading out to AFCON u/17 in Algeria, but it was not the case for the under 20’s as they failed to qualify for under-20 AFCON thus missing out on under-20 FIFA World Cup for yet another year.
The South African football association needs to make tough decisions regarding junior national teams as it seems, despite all the resources, seem difficult to qualify for major tournaments.
Now, the attention will be on to Bafana Bafana as they will be battling it out against Liberia in Monrovia to see who qualifies alongside Morocco, whom have already qualified following their wins at home against both Liberia and South Africa in the early group matches.
Amajita also failed qualify for AFCON that serves as the U20 FIFA World Cup qualification.

Bafana Bafana squandered a 2-0 lead at the Orlando Stadium to draw 2-2 against the same Liberia they’re hoping to beat in an artificial turf. Lyle Forster’s first half brace looked to have set to secure qualification until the moment of madness fell on the Bafana team as they conceded two goals much to the disappointment of the many fans who were at the stadium.
A win for Bafana will guarantee qualification to AFCON 2024 in Ivory Coast, while a defeat means another failed attempt to qualify for yet another major tournament.
The match will be live on TV at 6pm, South African time.
