Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos announced his 23-man squad to face Nigeria and Zimbabwe in key upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.
Broos called up Burnley striker Lyle Foster for the first time since the 23-year-old missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.
“His health problem is sorted, and I was very angry at certain moments because we got the news that Lyle was not ready, he had mental problems and suddenly he started playing. He did not go with us to AFCON because he was not ready,” Broos told SABC Sport.
“After that in March, I spoke to Burnley and they told me ‘No, it is better that you don’t call him at the moment because he is still having mental problems’. But he still played for Burnley and it was not easy to accept that. But now everything is okay, I called him and we had a good chat and there are no problems anymore,” the Bafana mentor added.
Bafana will face the Super Eagles on 7 June before hosting Southern Africa neighbours Zimbabwe four days later in Bloemfontein. South Africa are currently second in Group C on three points, trailing leaders Rwanda by a single point after two matches played.
