Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze will be sidelined for the remainder of 2017 after suffering an ankle injury during the 4-4 draw with Schalke on Saturday.

The talented 25-year-old playmaker suffered the injury blow during the second half at Signal Iduna Park, where Die Schwarzgelben surrendered a 4-0 lead after half-time.

Gotze, who scored his first goal for the club since December 2016 in the clash, had previously been out of action for five months earlier this year with a metabolic disorder.

With the Germany international seemingly returning to the kind of form that saw him score the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina, it seems his injury comes as a cruel blow.

Gotze had made 11 starts in all competitions for Peter Bosz’s side this season, as well as a further two appearances from the bench, yet he’s is unlikely to feature before the mid-season break.
