City lose ground in crazy Premier League action

City’s treble-winning campaign will probably always be remembered for the freakish goal-scoring exploits of Erling Haaland. But the basis of their incredible success was an ultra-reliable defensive unit that defied conventional footballing wisdom.

Akanji and Ake played the majority of the season in pragmatic fullback roles (with Walker only coming back into the fold against electric wingers like Vinicius Jr). Stones- a central defender- inverted to play alongside Rodri in a system that the rest of Europe found impossible to counter.

What on earth has happened to their defensive cohesion? Sure, the Stones injury has obviously altered the fabric of the entire defensive system. But that can’t be enough to explain the calamitous defensive performances that we are seeing from this current City side.

They dropped more points this weekend, conceding three goals at home to a ragtag Spurs side to cede more ground to both Arsenal and Liverpool. And they honestly looked like they could concede every time they were on the back foot.

I think that the progressive instincts of Walker and Gvardiol are actually hurting the side. With Stones on the verge of making a return to action, Guardiola will likely look to tighten up things by reverting to Akanji and Ake as a more frugal fullback pairing.

Liverpool produce vintage comeback to keep pace with Gunners

The highlight of the weekend had to be Liverpool’s incredible last-gasp comeback win against an extremely game Fulham side. Honestly, what a match!

The mystique of Trent Alexander Arnold just continues to deepen. Oft-maligned for his defensive frailties, his undeniable offensive abilities make him one of the most dangerous and divisive talents in the modern game.

But Sunday’s seesaw affair against Fulham really presented him with the perfect platform to strut his stuff. It was his scintillating freekick- deflected in off Bern Leno- that got the ball rolling in this classic. And he then turned into the saviour of the day, pushed into a more progressive role when the side was trailing 3-2 in the dying moments.

The way he hit the winner was reminiscent of Gerrard in his pomp and Liverpool really look like they are here to stay in this season’s title race.

It really feels like it’s Arsenal time to inherit the Premier League throne. But don’t discount Klopp’s brand of chaos just yet (not to mention the stuttering three-time defending champions City).

Bayer Leverkusen held at home by stubborn Dortmund side

Undefeated Leverkusen saw their eight-game winning streak end as they were held 1-1 at home to a defensively stoic Dortmund side. Leverkusen completely dominated the football, creating 22 efforts on goal compared to Dortmund’s paltry six.

Julian Ryerson put Dortmund ahead in the opening moments and they managed to hold onto that lead going into the break (it was the first time this season that Leverkusen had failed to score in the first half). And Dortmund just sat back and absorbed the pressure in the 2nd half, with Mats Hummels following up his man-of-the-match performance against Milan with another brilliant central defensive showing.

But Leverkusen weren’t to be outdone, with Nigerian forward Boniface eventually equalizing in the 79th minute. It was a goal that helped Alonso’s side preserve their unbeaten record but I’m sure the Spanish manager will be ruing his side’s attacking wastefulness.

This was the perfect opportunity for them to create some breathing space at the top of the Bundesliga standings, with Bayern Munich’s home match with Union Berlin cancelled due to snowy conditions in Munich.

Now Bayen have the Bundesliga initiative courtesy of their insane goal difference. Still, this Leverkusen side is the real deal and I wouldn’t write off their chances just yet.

Joao Felix once again a talisman for Barca

Joao Felix- the wandering misfit toy of European football- came back to haunt his parent club by scoring the winner as Barca beat an in-form Atletico 1-0. It was exactly the sort of polished, commanding performance that Xavi needed after his side scraped through their Champions League encounter with Porto.

Xavi wisely chose to bench the static Romeu and went in favour of a midfield trio of Pedri, Gundogan and De Jong. And it proved a masterstroke, with Gundogan absolutely dictating proceedings from the base of the midfield. Raphinha also had his best game in an absolute age while Lewandowski’s wasteful finishing kept the scoreline respectable.

Real Madrid consolidated their advantage atop the LaLiga standings over the other big players- not including Girona- with a comfortable 2-0 win over Granada. Real were far from their fluent best, with Jude Bellingham having an uncharacteristically poor game (he will need to watch that temper in more important matches).

But they were always too strong for Granada, with Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo guiding Los Blancos to victory. Rodrygo has now scored five times in three games for Real and I’m pretty certain that they will shake off a stubborn Girona in the weeks to come.

Inter pick up statement win at the home of the champs

A rejuvenated Juventus did what they needed to do this weekend (barely). Federico Gatti scored a last-gasp winner for the Bianconeri as they inched past a resolute Monza on Friday night. That result took them to the top of the Italian standings and really laid down the gauntlet for Simone Inzaghi’s Inter.

Inter travelled to champions Napoli knowing that they needed a result to leapfrog Juventus back into top spot. Inter came back in thrilling style to secure a draw against Benfica midweek and they clearly brought all that positive momentum into this crunch encounter.

They eased past Napoli 3-0, with the midfield trio of Mkhitaryan, Calhanoglu and Barella absolutely bossing the match. It was the type of assured away performance that really makes you take them seriously as Champions League contenders.

Also, AC Milan romped home to victory against Frosinone, with Christian Pulisic’s return to the starting lineup having an immediate impact on the Rossoneri.

Player of the Week- Nicolò Barella

Coveted by the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, the effervescent Italian midfielder proved instrumental in Inter’s dominant 3-0 win at Napoli this weekend.

He scored a beautiful goal and created an assist in a dynamic performance that recalled his best form from last season. I truly believe that the diminutive powerhouse could be the key to Inter contending for top honours this season.
