Conte to elevate North London giants

Well, I don’t think anyone saw this coming. Mikel Arteta and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been dodging the sack like Neo in The Matrix for over two years apiece. But a beleaguered Nuno Espirito Santo was relieved of his duties following two and a half poor months.

And they say Spurs is not an ambitious club. Antonio Conte- long thought to be the logical successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer- looks set to become the man in charge at Spurs. It must be quite galling for certain segments of the United faithful. Conte just exudes the type of effortless charisma that the United job demands. They even played with his favoured 5-3-2 formation during last week’s victory against Spurs. But I don’t think the Glazers are particularly keen on Conte’s mercenary nature.

But how are Spurs going to manage with his wham-bam approach to management? Conte is all about short-term gains. I just don’t necessarily see the fit between Spurs and Conte. Spurs need a long-term rebuild under someone such as Graeme Potter. Nuno was never going to work. He was a Diet Pepsi version of Mourinho. His style- or lack thereof- was never going to play with the Spurs fans.

However, at least Conte has the type of profile that may bring Harry Kane out of his current footballing coma. But I feel that Dele Alli’s days at Spurs may be numbered (Newcastle could be the logical destination for the luxury midfielder). I think the Italian could have afforded to be patient for a few weeks. United have a brutal set of upcoming fixtures that could render Solskjaer’s reign untenable.

As far as projects go- the United one is full of potential. I really struggle to see the way forward at Spurs. Is Levy prepared to splash the cash in January? Levy and Conte could be a marriage made in footballing hell. And I don’t think they are going to be getting 150 million for Kane at this moment in time. This could damage the Conte aura.

And just as a quick sidenote: how long will Ole persist with this new system? It certainly does make them a far more compact unit. But it virtually nullifies the use of wingers in a side whose DNA is defined by width. Where does this leave Jadon Sancho? And how does Pogba- who is currently negotiating a potentially ridiculous new contract- fit into this system? I just don’t see this as the long-term fix for Ole at United. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they stick with it through both the Atalanta and City matches. They might as well have got Antonio Conte.

Milan continue to impress

You just have to love the irrepressible Zlatan. People wax lyrical about Cristiano Ronaldo’s terrific feats of physical endurance. Zlatan is 40 and is still proving the decisive figure in games. He helped Milan secure an all-important victory away at Roma, consigning his former boss Jose Mourinho to yet another defeat.

It has helped them keep pace with Napoli in an exhilarating Serie A title race. Massimiliano Allegri’s return to Turin hasn’t helped Juventus rediscover their domestic form. After another embarrassing defeat to Verona, they remarkably sit 9th in the current Italian hierarchy. It’s amazing just how many European giants are currently in a state of flux. Juventus, Barcelona and Manchester United are all struggling to assert themselves in a changing football landscape.

The Nou Camp blues

Ronald Koeman’s horrifying tenure at Barcelona finally came to an end last week. I honestly don’t know what precipitated him getting the job in the first place. His attempts at ‘Total Football’ have been muddled affairs at every single appointment he has had.

The Catalan club need to act quickly if they wish to keep within touching distance of their biggest rivals. Both Madrid sides won this weekend. Barcelona giants could only muster a 1-1 draw with Alaves. But can Barca afford a world-class manager at this moment? It would appear that former star player Xavi is the current favourite to inherit the role.

I don’t know. They just completely failed under the tutelage of former Barca legend Roland Koeman. But perhaps Xavi could provide the bridge between Guardiola-Barcelona and a prospective future Barcelona. But something needs to change. A paltry 37,278 were in attendance at the Nou Camp this week. This cathedral of modern football has turned into a crypt in recent months and it’s quite depressing to behold.

Bayern defensive frailties?

It’s hard to really criticise a side after they just won 5-2 (particularly when they are still sitting atop the Bundesliga standings). But after their horrendous 5-0 German Cup defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach last week, the Bavarian side has now shipped in seven goals in two games.

Sure, they have scored a record 38 goals at this stage of the Bundesliga. Lewandowski has scored 17 goals in 14 matches this season (including five in the Champions League). Upamecano has been a concern of late and I’m just thinking of Bayern’s potential latter fixtures in the Champions League.

Dortmund once again thrived without Haaland, securing their first clean sheet of the season with a 2-0 victory against Koln. SC Freiburg currently occupy 3rd spot in the German top flight. They are currently the only unbeaten side in German domestic football (though that will be challenged as they visit Bayern this coming weekend).

Player of the week- Aaron Ramsdale

This will be my 2nd goalkeeping selection in recent weeks following Mendy’s heroics at Brentford. But you cannot deny that Aaron Ramsdale has been one of the most unlikely success stories of the season thus far. I personally think that the likes of Peter Schmeichel were getting a touch carried away by calling that save one of the greatest in living memory.

His spring was exceptional but it was still pretty central. Nonetheless, Ramsdale pulled off a number of brilliant saves to deny Leicester last week. Beyond that, his distribution was right out of the Ederson playbook. His immense passion for the club has already made him a firm fan favourite and seems to have galvanized the team. He has almost made it cool to support the Gunners again. And if that doesn’t deserve Player of the Week, what does?
