Gavin Hunt’s side’s top-four aims faced a setback in their recent encounter against Sekhukhune United, where they settled for a 1-1 draw at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

“I thought we had it but experience cost us again, we are learning the hard way and what can you do?” Hunt said post-match.

Tuesday’s stalemate pushed Sekhukhune into fourth place, behind champions-elect Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, and Orlando Pirates, and ahead of TS Galaxy and SuperSport.

Reflecting on SuperSport’s performance throughout the season, Hunt insisted that his young side were exceeding expectations.

“Overachieving with some of these kids but lack of experience is costing us. We are learning and we will get better.”

“The ambition is to try to finish as high as we can, we will still be in the top four, it can still happen. A win could have been a big step forward but we are learning on the job.”

SuperSport next face Cape Town Spurs on Friday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium with a desperate Spurs clinching a much-needed boost to their survival hopes after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Royal AM at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Gabriel Michael emerged as the hero for Spurs by scoring the only goal of the match from a penalty just after the hour mark.

Despite the win, Spurs remain rock-bottom of the DStv Premiership standings. However, Tuesday’s victory narrows the gap between them and Richards Bay to just five points, giving them renewed hope in their battle against relegation.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
