The 2018/19 German Bundesliga season will commence on the 24th of August 2018. Find out who our football expert is backing to claim top honours this season.
The 2018/19 German Bundesliga is just around the corner and it would be best that we get reacquainted with one of the biggest football leagues in the world. We start with the most consistent team, Bayern Munich.
The Bavarian giants have been cruising to title after title with nobody giving them too much of a hassle but I was impressed with how Schalke and Hoffenheim improved their game last season. Borussia Dormund, Bayer Leverkusen and Leipzig were off the boil but are expected to give the defending champions a solid title-challenge.
To Win Outright
Bayern Munich 1/6
Borussia Dortmund 6/1
Leipzig 25/1
Schalke 33/1
Bayer Leverkusen 33/1
The Contenders
Bayern Munich
Other than manager Niko Kovac, Bayern Munich haven’t done too much business in the transfer market. The Bavarians have also sold Arturo Vidal to Barcelona, leaving their midfield with a slight lack of fight in the middle of the park. Of course, the Bundesliga have talented central midfielders but none which can fill the void left by the Chilean international.
Nonetheless, Bayern Munich’s football and tactical play is second to none in the Bundesliga and after ending last season 21 points clear of the next best team, the Reds are short favourites to make it seven league titles in a row.
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund are sure to keep the defending champions on their toes but their lack of depth and quality caught up with them last season and it looks like it could be a case of Déjà vu for the Black and Yellow army.
To their credit, the signing of Axel Witsel will only improve their midfield, adding a bit of bite and creativity to their team. The BVB started last season like a house on fire but that flame eventually died out. It’s up to manager Lucien Favre and his team to maintain their intensity and winning attitude throughout this 34-game campaign but only time will tell as to how they will progress.
Leipzig
Leipzig lacked a consistent winning formula last season but after bolstering their squad with the likes of Nordi Mukiele, Matheus Cunha and Marcelo Saracchi, the Red Bulls are well on their way to mounting another title-challenge.
Manager Ralf Rangnick’s style of football is similar to that of Atletico Madrid – defend in numbers and counter-attack with pace. There is definitely enough quality in this squad to challenge but there’s also a question of depth.
Schalke
Schalke will be in and around the top of the table after their morale-boosting second place finish last season. The Royal Blues have also made at least four decent signings to help combat the loss of Max Meyer, Benedikt Howedes and Leon Goretzka. Schalke proved that they have the quality to challenge and they should be fresh and ready to better their previous effort.
Verdict: Bayern Munich (1/6)
This league is becoming a little too easy for Bayern Munich and at this point, it’s difficult to pick an upset. On that note, I do like the look of Leipzig this season and I think they have plenty to offer, while Dortmund and Schalke are likely to battle it out for second and third.
There you have it folks, Bayern Munich, as short as they are on the betting front, look a banker to be crowned champions for a record seventh consecutive season.
