Kaizer Chiefs’ Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung has revealed Amakhosi are working on launching a women’s team.  Jessica, who has served Kaizer Chiefs for years, was this week confirmed as a member of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Organising Committee for Women Football Standing Committee from 2022-2024. The announcement made by Chiefs on Wednesday afternoon raised a couple of eyebrows seeing as Amakhosi don’t have a women’s team of their own and have seemingly dragged their feet when it comes to investing in Women’s Football locally.  The Confederation of African Football (CAF) stated that clubs in Africa will no longer be eligible for inter-club competitions if they do not have a women’s football team under their umbrella. If Chiefs want to compete in any continental competition next season, they will need to make fast in their launch of a women’s side, something only Mamelodi Sundowns compared to other teams competing in the Premier Soccer League.  Addressing the media during a press conference at the Village on Wednesday this is what Motaung had to say on the matter:  “There’s a lot of work happening behind the scenes – several plans have been put in place, in fact, we even have a meeting this afternoon on some of the issues. “The significance hasn’t been lost and we’re taking it very seriously, the club’s position in terms of where it could be and its participation in CAF is also making it very urgent for us and there’s been a lot of work behind the scenes. I can say by the end of this season or the beginning of the new season we’ll definitely have some announcements.”

NEWS: Feisal Salum to Orlando Pirates?

Motaung didn’t rule out buying an established women’s team already competing in the Hollywoodbets Super League, which kicked off two weeks ago or lower.  “We’re looking at all the options, there’s been a lot of research and scenario planning as to which are the best options but I can’t speak to that now. We’re looking at all the options.” Other teams with a keen interest of getting a run in CAF competitions next season such as Orlando Pirates, Royal AM and Cape Town City FC will also have to consider CAF’s new rule after qualification.
