2023 AFCON qualifying wrap round 1

Egypt beat Guinea 1-0 in their Group D clash of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers on Sunday at Cairo International Stadium.

The only goal of the match was scored by substitute Mostafa Mohamed late in the game.

The first-half was dominated by Egypt possession-wise but they could not find a way past Guinea goalkeeper Ibrahim Kone, who made a great save stopping Mahmoud Hamdi El Wensh scoring with a header.

Kone also made a decent save off of Omar Marmoush’s free-kick.

In the second half, Guinea’s Thierno Barry and Amadou Diawara had shots but flew wide of the Egypt goal and should have at least tested the keeper.

As the match entered the latter stages, Egypt scored in the 86th minute when Mohamed took a shot at goal which deflected off Mouctar Diakhaby’s leg past Kone to make it 1-0 in favour of the Pharaohs in their opening match.

Malawi 2-1 Ethiopia

In the other Group D match on Sunday, Malawi beat Ethiopia 2-1 in Lilongwe to lead the group on goal difference above Egypt on three points.

Two penalties by striker Gabadinho Mhango gave Malawi a 2-0 lead at half-time while another penalty by Abubeker Nasir in the second half have Ethiopia a consolation goal.

Tunisia 0-0 Botswana

In Group J, Tunisia could not find a way past hosts Botswana in Francistown.

In the standings, Tunisia lead on four points after two games, followed by Libya on three points from one game then comes Botswana with one while bottom on Zero pints is Equatorial Guinea.

Central African Republic 1-1 Ghana

In Group E, Ghana took the lead over CAR in the 17th minute through Mohammed Kudus in the 17th minute, but minutes before the half-time break CAR grabbed the equaliser via Karl Namnganda.

The result means that after two matches Ghana head the group with four points on goal difference from Angola while CAR are on one point with Madagascar.

Madagascar 1-1 Angola

In Antananarivo, Njiva Rakotoharimalala gave Madagascar the lead in the 36th minute and Gelson Dala grabbed the equaliser for Angola two minutes before half-time.
