Desiree Ellis hails Banyana’s fighting spirit as they set up last 16 clash with Netherlands

Banyana Banyana showcased their resilience and determination in a thrilling 3-2 victory against Italy this morning in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The significant triumph marks their first-ever entry into the last 16 of the World Cup, a remarkable milestone for South African women’s football.

The game started with an early setback as Arianna Caruso converted a penalty, putting the African team on the back foot. However, a bizarre own goal leveled the scores, igniting hopes of a comeback for Desiree Ellis’ spirited squad.

With the game finely balanced, Hildah Magaia stepped up and appeared to have sealed the comeback with a goal 20 minutes from time, only to see Caruso deliver another blow minutes later by completing her brace from close range following a corner.

Banyana Banyana, however, refused to be denied. With 15 minutes left on the clock, they dug deep and found yet another gear. Thembi Kgatlana stepped up and etched her name in history, becoming the heroine as she calmly tapped home from close range, securing her team’s place in the last 16.

“They fought like warriors. They fought like the heroines that we know they are. They fought to be historically remembered, and they’ve made history, not just getting our first win, but going to the round of 16, and that is freaking amazing,” said Desiree Ellis, South Africa coach.

The victory showcased Banyana Banyana’s tenacity on the field and highlighted the growth of women’s football in South Africa. Ellis’ squad are now set to face the Netherlands in the last 16.

Coach Ellis’ words perfectly encapsulate the sheer determination and grit that Banyana Banyana displayed on the pitch. Their journey to the last 16 was not without its challenges, but their unwavering spirit and commitment to making their mark on the global stage was evident throughout the game.

The significance of this achievement cannot be understated. For a team that has faced its fair share of struggles and obstacles, this triumph stands as a testament to their progress and growth over the years. It is a beacon of hope for young aspiring female footballers in South Africa, inspiring them to dream big and reach for the stars.

The upcoming clash against the Netherlands in the last 16 promises to be a thrilling encounter. The Dutch team is formidable, and Banyana Banyana will need to summon their fighting spirit once again to make it to the Women’s World Cup quarter-finals.
