OPINION: Mzansi, let us rally behind Bafana Bafana!

Bafana Bafana are one of the most criticized teams and are often compared to other national teams like the Rugby World cup winning Springboks and the Proteas who have at least made it to the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup.

Bafana will play host to Benin this Saturday at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban as they kick-off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and I say that a little support for our boys could go a long way.

Both these teams last met in the opening round of the AFCON in January 2004 where South Africa won by 2-0.

But most recently, Bafana gave a thrilling performance when they played an international friendly against Cote D’Voire in October. They drew that game by 1-1, proving once again that they are not to written off.

Captain Percy Tau has called for the country to rally behind them in the build up to this game, saying that it would make a huge difference and that they too would like to make South Africa proud by playing in the World Cup.

It is no secret that Bafana did not qualify to play in the 2010 World Cup. They were only allowed to play because they were the hosts.

However, I personally think they deserve to be given another chance. They need all the support they can get and hopefully that is what will help put them one step closer towards competing in the World Cup.

The Boks had the whole country’s full support and they won. The Proteas had the whole country’s support and they made it to the semi-finals, while giving us a thrilling and nail-biting performance at that.

Now think about it, it wouldn’t be so bad to support the boys. We have nothing to lose right? Imagine us celebrating Bafana Bafana for a change.

It is possible because some of the best players have joined the team, 6 of which come from the AFL winning Masandawana, namely, Aubrey Modiba, Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Tebogo Mokoena, Themba Zwane and Mothobi Mvala.

Coach Hugo Broos also seems to be very confident of the players he chose, including Orlando Pirates’ forward Evidence Makgopa, who will be replacing Lebo Mothiba due to injury.

“Not having Lyle Foster and Lebo Mothiba is a loss, but it will not be an excuse for me if the results are not good against Benin. I have confidence in the players who will be playing.” said Broos.

He added that he knows what the players have achieved that can help them against both teams.” said Broos.
