Australia is another team I keep getting told are so poor, and yet they are unbeaten in six of their last seven international games! Australia needs to just avoid defeat to ensure qualification into the knockout stages, an unbelievable feat for the Socceroos.
Australia was duly dispatched 4-1 by France but replied well to beat Tunisia 1-0. I’m a little surprised then by the bookmaker’s evaluation of this encounter, yes Australia is the lower ranked side, but they are the only side in this fixture who have shown a consistent performance.
I suppose the only point of concern will be the fact that Australia haven’t necessarily scored a plethora of goals…
Denmark is truly flirting with elimination; they could only muster a draw with Tunisia before losing to France and now find themselves with only one point going into this game. This is the same side who progressed all the way to the final four of Euro 2020 but have flattered to deceive in Qatar.
The Danes will know that only victory against the Aussies would allow them to qualify here, and even then, they will need things to go their way in the France and Tunisia game.
Denmark have only scored once all tournament – yes you read that correctly – and it came from their centre back Andreas Christensen. You cannot win football games without scoring goals and so something will need to give when they step out on Wednesday evening.
Verdict: First team to score – Australia (9/4)
Australia have consistently got out of the blocks brilliantly. They haven’t necessarily gone on to win every time, but they certainly take the game to their opposition. Graham Arnold has continued to reinforce the idea that his side doesn’t concede space or time and believe it in their best interest to play an expansive game.
While I do think they can go on and win this fixture, having a crack at them scoring first at 9/4 is certainly worth your time.
