The Canadian National Team will return to the World Cup stage for the first time in 36 years when they face Belgium at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Wednesday.
The Belgians will definitely fancy themselves for a shot at global glory. Having slipped from the summit of FIFA’s rankings in recent times, they’ll be looking to set the record straight this year. Canada is one of the host countries for the 2026 spectacle, alongside the United States and Mexico respectively, however, it will be unprecedented for all three of them to get automatic entry.

I simply have to start with Kevin De Bruyne; the Manchester City dangerman has been playing out of his socks this season. In the EPL, De Bruyne has created 48 chances – at least 10 more than any other player in the English topflight.
For country, he was one of only three players to appear in the top 10 for both chances created and shots on target during the UEFA Nations League earlier this year. With many positions in the starting line-up up for grabs, one thing is for certain, De Bruyne will be ever present.
With just one game for the Devils over the past year, Romelu Lukaku could be ousted. Michy Batshuayi is more than a fitting replacement and may very well lead the line in Qatar.
During the Nations League, he netted three times from his 11 shots, hitting the woodwork once. Historically, he has played second fiddle to Lukaku, but after an impressive Nations League campaign, I think we will see more of the striker than previous years.
During the run up to the showdown in the Middle East, Canada’s defence has been significantly weakened. Centre back Scott Kennedy (shoulder) and goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau (leg) have been ruled out, whilst speedster Alphonso Davies (hamstring) has been included despite being injured.
Davies plys his trade as a wing back for Bavarian giants Bayern Munich but operates as a forward for the national team. The 22-year-old has played 34 times for Canada, scoring 12 goals during that period.
The nation received their invitation to the tournament following a 36-year absence and will be looking to soak it all up, before hosting the ensuing edition.
The CONCACAF outfit booked their spot on MD13, putting four past Jamaica without reply to round off a superb qualifying campaign. During that spell, the North Americans bagged 23 goals and conceded just seven.
Verdict: Belgium Win (9/20)
The Devils should take this one. Despite coming into the tournament with an 8-4-2 record, Canada’s defence has been dealt a heavy blow. With Alphonso Davies in a race against time to regain full fitness, I can only see a win for Belgium.
