Banyana Banyana are expecting more team members to join them in Côte d’Ivoire for the final round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier (WAFCON) against Burkina Faso.

Banyana’s Linda Motlhalo, Noko Matlou and Faith Nokuthula are the last three players expected to join up with the team in Côte d’Ivoire.

Coach Desiree Ellis had initially travelled with 20 players, with Ayesha Moose from the University of Johannesburg replacing Wendy Shongwe who could not travel due to an illness in her family.

Forward Jermaine ‘Jay’ Seoposenwe will link up with the team for the second leg of the face-off on Monday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

The ladies will go head-to-head with Burkina Faso on Thursday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny, in aims to defend the Women’s African Cup of Nations.

The team arrived in Côte d’Ivoire on Monday for country duty. 

This will be the last fixture for Banyana this year. The team will return to action in February 2024 to continue with their 2024 Olympics qualifiers.

Continental Awards

Apart from making history at the 2023 FIFA Women’s world cup by becoming the first ever South African senior national team to make it to the knockout stages of a FIFA tournament, the ladies have also been shortlisted in the National Team of the Year (women) category in the continental awards which will be hosted in Morocco next month.

Coach Desiree Ellis has also been shortlisted for Coach of the Year along with goalkeepers Andile Dlamini and Kaylin Swart for goalkeeper of the Year.

Thubelihle Shamase was shortlisted for Young player of the year and Lebohang Ramalepe for Interclub player of the Year, while Andile Dlamini, Hilda Magaia ad Thembi Kgatlana will be going head-to head for Player of the Year.
