Contrary to popular belief, Jerry “Legs of Thunder” Sikhosana’s favorite derby isn’t the 4-1 demolition of Kaizer Chiefs in which he scored a hat-trick.
The legendary striker scored the gigantic fixture’s solitary goal as the mighty Buccaneers emerged 1-0 victors in January 1997 and he rates the match as his best derby ever!
Sikhosana reveals that he had shared a room with Brian Baloyi in the Bafana Bafana camp a few days prior. That’s when they bet against each other as to who would come up trumps when they square off in club football.
The marksman would beat the shot stopper at his near post much to everyone’s amazement.
“That’s the most awkward goal you’ll find in the history of South African football, let alone the derby!” recollects Sikhosana.
“After the game we met with Brian and he said ‘Jerry, something is wrong. You’re using muti” because that was a goal he never thought would ever come after he had vowed to keep me at bay”.
