Messi’s Phantom Goal Puts VAR in Motion

La Liga president Javier Tebas has again called for the introduction of the Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR) system after Lionel Messi had a legitimate goal ruled out over the weekend.

Messi’s shot crossed the line before goalkeeper Neto scrambled the ball clear, in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Valencia at the Mestalla on Sunday.

“The goal was seen by all of Spain and the whole world,” Tebas said. “If I say it wasn’t a goal, you will tell me I was blind.

“It was a goal and nothing else and we hope that next season with the VAR we can solve these issues. We are going to work so that next season we have the VAR.”

The stalemate at the Mestalla sees Barca remain top of the league standings on 35 points, with Valencia four points below on 31 while Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are further behind on 27 points.
